Before buying a robot for multi-step tasks, write down the exact sequence you need it to complete, then ask each seller to demonstrate that full sequence in a realistic setting. Check not only whether it succeeds, but how reliably it repeats the task, what happens when a step fails, how much help a person must provide, and whether its safety, privacy, and support arrangements suit your home.
Define the job before comparing robots
“Multi-step” describes a workflow, not a capability. A robot may navigate well but be unable to pick up the object it needs; it may handle an object but fail to reach the right room. Judge the complete job rather than relying on labels such as “general-purpose” or a list of standalone features.
Write the sequence and the success condition
Describe the job in order, including the conditions at the start and what counts as completion. For example, a household task might begin with an object in a specified place, require the robot to travel through a doorway, pick up or interact with that object, and deliver it to a destination. State what the robot should do if the object is missing, the route is blocked, or the destination cannot be reached.
- Start condition: What must be in place before the robot begins?
- Actions: What must it do, and in what order?
- Completion: What observable result counts as success?
- Failure: Which missed or unsafe step makes the task incomplete?
Give extra weight to any step whose failure would make the robot useless or unsafe for your intended use.

Demand evidence for the whole task
See a realistic, repeatable demonstration
Ask to see the robot perform the entire sequence, not just a best-case single action or a promotional clip. Use the objects, surfaces, route, and room conditions that resemble your own. Include the least predictable step, and repeat the run: one successful attempt is weak evidence that a robot can perform a routine task reliably.
Record whether each step succeeds, how long the sequence takes if timing matters to you, and where a person has to intervene, approve an action, or reset the robot. Compare that human effort as well as task completion. A robot that eventually finishes only after frequent supervision may not solve the problem you are buying it for.
Ask for comparable evidence
If a seller cites a test or standard, ask what was tested, under what conditions, and whether the result covers your actual task. Compare candidates using the same sequence and similar conditions; a demonstration of one capability is not evidence for a different step in your workflow.
Check the route, objects, and sensing in your home
Walk the intended route and note the physical constraints the robot must handle. A map or specification cannot establish that a candidate will work in your particular layout.

- Measure doorways and check that the robot can reach every work area.
- Inspect floor transitions, thresholds, ramps, clutter, and the kinds of surfaces along the route.
- Consider lighting, obstacles that move, and the space and access needed for docking or charging.
- Check whether the robot can sense and manipulate the actual objects involved, including their size, shape, placement, and surface.
Ask the seller to demonstrate the difficult transitions and object interactions, rather than inferring performance from general marketing claims.
Find out how it handles failure and human intervention
Multi-step jobs create more opportunities for a task to stop partway through. Ask what the robot does when it encounters a blocked route, drops or misplaces an object, misunderstands an instruction, loses power or connectivity, or cannot complete a step.
Look for a clear indication that the task has stopped or needs help, a safe way to pause it, and a practical recovery path. Find out whether it can resume at the right point or must restart. During the demonstration, note which problems it recognizes on its own and which require a person to notice, approve, move something, or reset it.
Review safety for the task and the people nearby
Safety depends on what the robot does and where it operates. Ask the manufacturer for the risk assessment and safeguards relevant to your intended task, environment, and nearby people. Check the stop, pause, and recovery behavior under foreseeable faults—not just during normal operation.

ISO/TR 23482-2:2019 provides guidance for applying ISO 13482, including risk assessment and risk reduction for personal care robots and close human-robot interaction. OSHA’s robot guidance likewise emphasizes assessing the particular application, environment, operation, maintenance, and foreseeable failures. Neither source certifies a consumer model, so ask for model- and task-specific safety evidence rather than treating a reference to either as proof of safety.
Ask what data the robot handles and how it is supported
Privacy and information security
Ask the manufacturer what audio, video, location, or other data the robot collects; where that data is processed or stored; what account or remote-access features exist; and how updates are delivered. Get the current policies for the exact model. A mobility or performance evaluation is not a privacy certification.
Maintenance and ongoing ownership
Use model-specific documentation to check power use, charging time and location, operating noise or other environmental effects, maintenance, consumables, warranty, repair options, and expected software support. These details vary by product, so do not assume that a general standard or category description answers them.

IEC 62849:2025
The International Electrotechnical Commission published IEC 62849:2025 on 2025-11-24, replacing its 2016 edition. It covers specified indoor, floor-supported wheeled or tracked robots no taller than 1.75 m, no wider than 700 mm, and with a maximum speed of 1.5 m/s. It excludes wet and dry surface-cleaning robots and combinations of those functions, so it should not be applied indiscriminately to every home robot.

- INCREDIBLE SUCTION: Powerful Shark suction picks up dirt and debris on all floor types—tackling even the toughest of messes in your home.
- NO SPOTS MISSED: With Matrix Clean Navigation, the vacuum cleans in a precise matrix grid taking multiple passes over dirt and debris for whole home, deep cleaning coverage.
- IT EMPTIES ITSELF: The bagless, self-emptying base holds up to 30 days of dirt and debris while its true HEPA filtration captures and traps 99.97%* of dust and allergens (*down to .3 microns).
- PRECISION HOME MAPPING: 360° LiDAR vision quickly and accurately maps your home so your robot can methodically clean detecting and avoiding objects in its path, day or night, adapting to everyday changes in the home.
- PERFECT FOR HOMES WITH PETS: With powerful vacuum suction, Shark’s self-cleaning brushroll, and HEPA filtration system the robot captures pet hair, dust, dander and allergens with ease.
The 2025 edition includes evaluation methods in areas such as mobility, navigation, energy use, environmental effects, obstacle avoidance, ramps, and thresholds. These methods can help you plan questions for a home demonstration, but the standard sets no minimum result that makes a robot suitable for your task. The IEC page states: “This document is neither concerned with safety nor with performance requirements.”
Other useful references—and their limits
China’s standards catalogue lists GB/T 41433-2022, Household and similar service robots—Consumer guide, as current, with publication and implementation dates of 2022-04-15. This confirms that consumer guidance exists for the category; it does not endorse any particular model. GB/T is a Chinese national standard, and its status does not by itself establish a legal requirement or certification elsewhere.
NIST’s response-robot standards program compares task-relevant capabilities such as mobility, manipulation, sensors, energy, communications, human-robot interfaces, logistics, and safety. Its robots and settings concern emergency response, not household products. The useful takeaway for a home purchase is the task-specific comparison approach: define the job, then examine evidence for each capability it requires.
Compare candidates with the same scorecard
Use one task sequence and the same comparison categories for every candidate. Rate each against your needs, and give more weight to steps where failure would make the robot ineffective or unsafe.
