A 75-inch TV is usually the better fit for a bright, shared living room and straightforward daily viewing. A projector is usually the better fit when a much larger, cinema-style image matters most and you can plan the room, screen, and projector placement around it. The right choice depends chiefly on room light, screen size and seating distance, throw distance, and how much setup you are willing to do.
75-inch TV or projector: the main differences
| Consideration | 75-inch TV tends to suit | Projector tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| Room light | Daytime viewing, windows, or a shared living room | Evening viewing or a room where light can be controlled |
| Image size | A fixed 75-inch screen is enough | A substantially larger image is central to the goal |
| Setup | A fixed-size display and simple daily operation | You can measure throw, align the image, and choose a screen |
| Seating | You prefer a known, fixed screen size | You can match the image size to your seating distance and viewing angle |
| Sound | Built-in audio may be adequate for casual viewing | A separate soundbar or surround-sound system may be part of the plan |
These are category-level tendencies, not guarantees for every product. The result also depends on the specific TV or projector, screen material, room conditions, settings, and installation. LG and BenQ both describe TVs as better able to compete with ambient light, while light can lower projected contrast and make an image look washed out (LG’s TV-versus-projector guide; BenQ’s comparison).

Which is better for movies and a big-screen experience?
Choose a projector when image scale is the priority
Projection’s chief advantage is the potential for a far larger image than a 75-inch TV. LG says images over 100 inches are normal for projectors, and that the larger scale can make movies and games feel more involving. A bigger image also makes resolution and screen quality more consequential, so consider the full viewing setup rather than diagonal size alone.
Choose a 75-inch TV when predictable daily viewing matters more
A TV is generally the more practical choice for a room used throughout the day, especially if the screen must work well with windows or lights on. It also avoids choosing and positioning a separate projection screen. Individual models vary, so these category-level differences do not guarantee how two particular products will compare.

Will a projector work in your living room?
It can, but assess light and installation before choosing one. A living room with substantial daylight may reduce the contrast of a projected image; a darker room or the ability to control light is more favorable. Screen material and gain also affect the result. ProjectorCentral treats image size, brightness, ambient light, and screen gain as connected planning factors in its 2026 home theater projector buying guide.
Projection is a system decision: account for the projector, screen, placement, room-light control, and audio. LG notes that projectors usually rely on external audio, so include a soundbar or other sound system in your plan if the projector’s audio will not meet your needs.
How to check projector screen size and throw distance
Measure for the specific projector
Do not assume a projector will fit based on a generic distance. The required throw changes by projector and zoom setting. Epson America’s 2025 reference for the EB992F lists a 16:9 100-inch image as 221 × 125 cm, with a projection distance of 134–181 cm. Its 150-inch entry is 332 × 187 cm, with a distance of 202–273 cm. Those figures apply to that model, not projectors generally (Epson EB992F projection-distance reference).

A separate LG USA support table lists 465 cm for a 100-inch screen at 1.0× zoom for the model it covers. That contrast with Epson’s figures shows why you need the selected projector’s own chart or calculator. LG’s setup guidance also says, “The distance between the projector and the screen determines the actual size of the image,” and advises positioning the lens at a right angle to the screen to avoid distortion (LG projector setup guidance).
- Choose the screen size you want and identify where it can sit in the room.
- Check the selected projector’s throw chart or calculator for that screen size and the available placement distance.
- Confirm the lens can face the screen at a right angle and that the planned position allows the image to align without unwanted distortion.
- Consider room light, screen material, and audio as part of the same setup before buying equipment.
Match the image size to seating distance
A larger image is not automatically a better fit: viewing distance affects how much of the screen fills your field of view. ProjectorCentral’s 2026 guide reports a 30-degree viewing-angle recommendation from SMPTE and a 36-degree recommendation from THX. As an example, the guide says that at 15 feet those angles correspond to 110-inch and 134-inch 16:9 diagonals, respectively. Treat these as planning references, not requirements; personal preference and available space matter too.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you decide?
- Lean toward a 75-inch TV if the room is bright, people watch at different times of day, a fixed screen is large enough, or ease of everyday use matters most.
- Lean toward a projector if a substantially larger image is central to your home theater, you can control room light, and you are willing to plan for the screen, throw distance, alignment, and sound.
- Before committing to projection, verify the screen-to-seating fit and the exact projector’s throw range. A nominal image size or a distance taken from another model is not enough.
No category is universally superior. The choice is a trade-off between a TV’s more predictable performance in ordinary room light and projection’s potential for a much larger image, with more room planning.
