Choose winter hiking boots for the route and conditions—not a label or a single insulation rating. Weigh terrain, trip length, pack weight, wetness, expected snow and ice, then try boots on with the socks you plan to wear. Waterproof boots and gaiters help keep wet snow and mud out; traction devices, snowshoes and crampons serve different surfaces and activities.

Start with the route, trip length and load

A maintained day-hike trail, a long trek with a heavy pack and a rugged snowy peak place different demands on footwear. More challenging terrain, longer outings and heavier loads generally call for more support and structure. Mountaineering boots are stiffer and designed for snowy peaks and rugged terrain, but that does not mean every winter hike requires them. Use the route and carried load to guide the level of support you need. REI’s hiking footwear guide, updated May 18, 2026, explains how terrain, duration and load affect footwear choice.

Choose warmth for your conditions, not a universal rating

The cited guidance does not establish a single insulation weight or temperature rating that works for all winter hikers. Consider how cold you tend to get, how active the hike will be and the weather you expect. Most importantly, the boot must remain comfortable with the sock thickness you intend to wear: extra insulation is not useful if it leaves your toes cramped or compromises fit.

Balance waterproof protection and breathability

Waterproof boots can help protect feet in wet snow, slush and mud. Waterproof hiking boots may also be hotter and less breathable than footwear designed to dry quickly and breathe well, so the better choice depends on conditions. For snow or mud that could enter around the boot top, gaiters provide additional protection. The National Park Service’s winter hiking essentials, last updated April 2, 2025, include waterproof boots and gaiters.

  • Durable & Slip Resistant: The rubber outsole is stable, slip & abrasion resistant, and flexible to various outdoor terrain.

Check fit with your hiking socks

Try boots on with socks of the thickness you expect to use on the trail. REI recommends measuring foot length, width and arch length, and trying boots later in the day, when feet may be larger. Check the fit rather than relying on a size number alone:

  • Your heel should feel secure without uncomfortable movement.
  • Laces and the tongue should not create pressure points.
  • Your forefoot should not feel pinched, and toes should not strike the boot’s end when you walk on an incline.
  • Notice any rubbing or hotspots before committing to a long hike.

Break in more substantial hiking, backpacking and mountaineering boots before taking them on a backcountry trip. As REI long-distance trail runner and Wichita department manager Carlos Rodriguez puts it, “The mark of a good shoe … is that I’m not thinking about it when I’m outside.”

Match traction to the surface

Boot tread alone may not be enough for winter conditions. Pick traction equipment according to the snow or ice you expect, and be prepared for conditions to vary along a route. The National Park Service’s Rocky Mountain National Park guidance, last updated January 14, 2026, notes that conditions can vary with elevation and direct sunlight.

Hard-packed snow and ice

Over-the-shoe traction devices are useful on hard-packed snow and ice. The NPS recommends carrying them because an unexpected icy stretch—even a short one—can matter. They help reduce slips and falls, but do not make hazardous terrain safe.

Soft, deep snow

Snowshoes are the better option for soft, deeper snow. They solve a different problem from over-the-shoe traction devices, which are intended for firmer snow and ice.

Technical climbing terrain

Technical crampons are not interchangeable with ordinary hiking traction. Compatibility depends on boot stiffness, binding type and the boot’s welts or grooves. Strap-on crampons can work with a broad range of footwear when the center bar flex matches the boot. Step-in bindings require rigid soles and toe and heel welts or grooves. A crampon on a flexible-soled boot is less secure than one on a rigid-soled boot. For technical mountaineering or ice climbing, do not assume ordinary hiking boots and lightweight traction devices are adequate. See REI’s crampon compatibility guide.

Compare your shortlist against the hike

Decision What to consider
Conditions Wet slush or melting snow favors water protection; cold, dry snow and expected packed or icy sections affect warmth and traction needs. NPS winter hiking tips; NPS traction guidance.
Terrain and trip demands Compare maintained day-hike trails with rugged or steep terrain, short outings with longer treks, and light with heavier carried loads. More demanding hikes generally call for more support. REI hiking footwear guide.
Warmth and fit Allow comfortable room for the socks you will wear without losing secure heel hold. No universal insulation rating is established by the cited guidance. REI hiking footwear guide.
Water protection and breathability Consider how wet the route is likely to be and whether added waterproof protection is worth the potential trade-off in heat and breathability. REI hiking footwear guide; NPS winter hiking tips.
Stiffness and traction compatibility Distinguish over-the-shoe traction for packed snow and ice, snowshoes for soft deep snow and crampons for activities requiring compatible boots and bindings. NPS traction guidance; REI crampon guide.

Plan for more than footwear

Winter conditions can change quickly. Check park information and local weather before heading out, and consult avalanche forecasts where relevant. Keep off unsafe ice and be willing to turn around. The NPS also lists warm waterproof clothing, extra dry clothing and other essentials; boots and traction equipment alone cannot make steep, icy or avalanche terrain safe.
