Use an authorized retailer API when it provides the fields and update behavior you need; choose a product feed for controlled bulk delivery; use scraping only when structured access is unavailable or insufficient and collection and reuse are permitted. The right choice depends on the particular source, your data requirements, access rights, freshness needs, and the effort required to keep the integration working. Some projects combine an API or feed with limited crawling to fill specific gaps.
First, check what “retailer API” means for your project
An API’s existence does not mean you can use it to retrieve any retailer’s product listings. Many retailer-related APIs are built for a retailer’s account holders, suppliers, or authorized integration partners—not for competitors seeking public catalog data.
For example, Google Merchant API is for programmatically managing product, inventory, and performance information associated with a Merchant Center account. It requires a Merchant Center account with appropriate permissions and a linked Google Cloud project. Walmart’s cited Item Management API is intended for suppliers, drop ship vendors, and internal teams; its documented functions include item setup, feed-status checks, taxonomy and field specifications, and catalog browsing. The Walmart guide describes OAuth-based access tokens. These examples do not establish access rights for every retailer or every API.
Before designing around an API, confirm who is eligible, which account or seller relationship is required, what scopes and fields are available, and what uses the agreement permits.

How the three methods differ
| Method | How data is obtained | Where it can fit | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retailer API | Your software makes structured requests to an interface, which may also support updates, status checks, or notifications. | Scoped, programmatic access and—in supported cases—more direct product or inventory updates. | Eligibility, authentication, fields, quotas, terms, and update behavior are specific to the API. A retailer-facing API may not expose competitor listings. |
| Product data feed | A source or authorized provider delivers a machine-readable file or other scheduled batch of product data. | Bulk catalog transfer and repeatable submission or refresh cycles. | Processing and refresh schedules matter; submission does not necessarily mean immediate availability. Feed formats and supported operations may change. |
| Scraping | A crawler retrieves information exposed on web pages and extracts fields from the page content. | A limited fallback or supplement when structured access does not provide needed data and the collection is allowed. | Pages can change, products can be missed, and page availability does not guarantee freshness or completeness. Terms, law, and downstream use must be checked. |
A feed is a delivery method; an API is an interface for software to request or change data. A platform can support both, and neither term guarantees a particular refresh speed or field set.
Choose based on the job you need to do
Choose an API when you need scoped, structured operations
An API is a strong fit when the data owner authorizes your access and the documented fields, operations, and update behavior suit your application. It can be useful for managing product or inventory information, checking processing status, or making supported updates without waiting for a bulk-file cycle.
Google Merchant API is the current successor to Content API for Shopping. Google describes it as a programmatic interface for managing product data sources, products, inventory, and performance information tied to a Merchant Center account. It is not a general lookup API for arbitrary competing retailers.

Choose a feed when bulk transfer and a known cadence matter
A feed can suit a large catalog when the provider can deliver the required fields in a controlled, machine-readable format and your system can accommodate the delivery and processing schedule. It may also carry details that are not visible on public product pages, such as store-level inventory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFeeds are not necessarily instant. Amazon’s Selling Partner Feeds API documentation says that under high load, feeds may take up to eight hours to process and are processed sequentially. That is an Amazon seller-feed operational statement, not a typical duration or a general limit for all feeds. Amazon also states that, starting July 31, 2025, its Feeds API no longer supports legacy XML and flat-file listing feeds for pricing, inventory, relationships, and images. Check the current specification for the feed you plan to use.
Use scraping only for a defined gap
Scraping may be a practical way to begin with a small, infrequently changing catalog if the pages expose the fields you need and the collection and intended use are permitted. It does not give you the source owner’s control over a complete catalog or scheduled updates, and page changes can require parser maintenance.

Google Search Central says its crawling does not guarantee that every product will be found or that changes will be processed on a chosen schedule. That statement concerns Google’s own crawling; it illustrates why a data consumer should measure coverage and freshness rather than assume them. Google also states: “Google does not guarantee how long it takes before changes on your site will be processed through crawling.”
A practical decision sequence
- Define the data and the rights you need. List the retailers, regions, product attributes, variants, identifiers, promotions, inventory detail, history, and refresh interval. Decide whether you need to retain, display, share, or redistribute the results.
- Ask the data owner about authorized access. Check API and feed eligibility, account requirements, permissions, field coverage, quotas, schema, latency, costs, and rules for retention and downstream use. Do not infer permission from a public endpoint or page.
- Test whether a feed meets the delivery need. Confirm how often it can be submitted or refreshed, what data it contains, when processing completes, and how errors are reported. Allow for batch processing rather than assuming a submission is immediately reflected.
- Test whether an API meets the interaction need. Review authentication, supported operations, versioning, status reporting, limits, and any notification or update mechanisms. Use the current product documentation rather than relying on a retired API name or format.
- Consider crawling only for unmet fields or sources. Verify the applicable site terms and policies, relevant law, and intended use before collecting. Keep the crawl limited to the gap it is meant to fill.
- Run a representative pilot before scaling. Measure product match rate, missing-field rate, freshness lag, update failures, schema changes, and engineering time spent on maintenance. Compare the same products and time period across candidate methods; do not treat a small sample as proof of universal performance.
Evaluate the trade-offs that can change the answer
Coverage and completeness
Ask whether the method includes all required products, variants, identifiers, regions, promotions, and inventory locations. Public pages may omit fields available through an authorized file or API; crawlers can also fail to discover every product. Verify against a known representative catalog rather than assuming that a successful page fetch means complete coverage.
Freshness and latency
Distinguish how often data can be sent or requested from how quickly it becomes usable downstream. Ask whether an update interval is documented or contractually committed, and measure the lag from a source change to its appearance in your system. Google’s Merchant product-data guidance describes periodic feeds and API updates as ways to control updates; its Search Central documentation does not promise a fixed crawl-processing time.

- Widely Compatible: Bluetooth Barcode Scanner for iPhone iPad Android Tablet PC, Support HID / SPP / BLE mode via bluetooth, Work with Windows XP/7/8/10, Mac OS, Windows Mobile, Android OS, iOS, Linux.
- Strong Recognition Ability: With the 2500 pixels high-resolution CCD sensor Engine, Rapidly decodes all 1D and stacked barcodes (including ISBN book), even worn, damaged or tightly spaced codes. Scan 1D codes directly from paper or screen, such as a computer monitor, smartphone, or tablet, or scan through glass surfaces, plastic shrink wrap, a CCD scanner is likely the best way to go.
- Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
- 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
- Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
Eligibility, rights, and intended use
Technical access and permission to use data are separate questions. Review the terms for the actual source and your actual purpose, including retention, display, sharing, commercial use, and competitive uses. Walmart’s API terms restrict distribution, commercial exploitation, and certain competitive uses of its API materials and data. Google Merchant Center’s listings policy prohibits scraped content copied from another source without added value in the context of its listings. Neither example decides whether a particular scraping activity is lawful everywhere; the answer depends on source, jurisdiction, and use.
The Japan Fair Trade Commission Competition Policy Research Center paper discusses webpages, market-intelligence providers, and API-accessible companies as data sources in research, including cases where platforms limit scraping. It is background on data-source choices, not legal advice or a universal rule.
Schema, operations, and upkeep
Compare documentation quality, versioning, authentication, error handling, retry behavior, deprecation notices, and normalization work. APIs and feeds can reduce the need to interpret page markup, but they still require integration and monitoring. Scrapers need checks for changed layouts and extraction failures. The actual maintenance burden depends on the specific source and implementation; there is no general cost comparison established here.

Cost and scale
Include access fees or provider charges, infrastructure, engineering time, failure monitoring, and the cost of missing or stale data. No universal price or cost winner follows from the method alone. Request applicable terms and use pilot results at your expected volume.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a hybrid approach makes sense
A hybrid design can be appropriate when an authorized API or feed covers the main catalog but omits a specific field or source that is available elsewhere. Make the boundary explicit: identify which source is authoritative for each field, reconcile identifiers, track the timestamp and provenance of each value, and flag conflicts rather than silently overwriting one source with another. Use crawling only where the gap, permission, and monitoring plan are clear.
Likewise, a feed can provide bulk catalog updates while an API handles supported targeted operations or status checks. Whether this is possible depends on the particular provider’s interfaces and terms.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The documented examples support comparing authorized access, field coverage, refresh behavior, permitted use, and operational requirements before choosing a route. They do not establish a universal percentage advantage, cost saving, or speed ranking for APIs, feeds, or scrapers. Treat any such comparison as source- and implementation-specific, and base it on published service commitments or a transparent pilot.
