Break in new boots on short outings; if a sock layer makes them tight or a spot keeps rubbing, fix the fit rather than trying to tough it out.
Why winter boots can cause blisters
Blisters develop when repeated friction or pressure stresses the skin. Pressure, heat and moisture can all contribute, and wet skin or footwear can make rubbing painful. In winter, thicker socks may add warmth but also reduce the space inside a boot. If they crowd your feet, they can create pressure and may restrict circulation. Sweat, snow and slush can also leave feet damp.
No particular sock layering system, tape or dressing guarantees prevention. The key is a comfortable boot-and-sock combination without persistent rubbing.
Fit boots with the socks you will wear
Try boots on with your intended winter socks, including any liner. Walk around and, if possible, test on an incline. The fit should hold your foot securely without pinching or letting your heel move repeatedly; your toes should not slide forward into the toe box. REI cautions that thick socks should not make boots too tight or cut off circulation (cold-weather hiking guidance).

#1 Best Overall
- Hiking Insoles for Men and Women: The arch is medium and cushioned, not stiff. They are soft enough for comfort over ten miles, but firm enough to keep your foot steady on rocks and roots. You will really notice the difference on long downhills
- Up to 56% Shock Absorption: When you carry a full pack, every step can feel heavier. Our shock layer takes in up to 56% of impact before it reaches your knees and lower back, so you stay comfortable all day
- Up to 47% Energy Return: The arch returns up to 47% of the energy you put into each step, rather than just absorbing it. It also helps take pressure off your knees when you walk downhill. By the end of a long day, your legs will feel the difference
- Dry Feet on Tough Climbs: A breathable cover and non-sweat layer pull heat and moisture away from your skin, keeping your boots drier on steep climbs and in warm weather. Wet feet cause blisters, and this helps prevent them
- Sized for Men and Women who Hike: Use the size chart to find your fit. Place your boots' insoles on top and trim around the front for an exact fit. These insoles are light enough for trail runners and tough enough for backpacking boots
If adding a liner or thicker sock creates tightness, try a different sock combination or a roomier boot. Do not assume that a constricting fit will become comfortable after break-in.
Break in new boots gradually
Do not make a demanding winter hike the first real outing in new boots. Wear them on short walks, then shorter hikes, increasing time gradually. Pay attention to repeated rubbing, and try a lacing adjustment if a particular area slips or presses. Persistent pinching or foot movement is a fit problem, not something break-in can reliably solve. See REI’s hiking injury prevention advice and NOLS’ trail foot-care guidance.

Choose socks for warmth, moisture and room
Moisture-wicking hiking socks can help manage sweat; avoid cotton when moisture management is important. A thin liner under a hiking sock is an option, not a requirement. REI and NOLS discuss liners, but the right choice depends on your feet and boots: keep the combination warm and comfortable without creating pressure or restricting circulation (REI blister prevention; NOLS foot-care guidance).
Manage moisture and protect hot spots early
In snow, slush or wet vegetation, gaiters may help keep water and snow out of footwear. On longer outings, carrying dry replacement socks gives you an option if your socks become wet; change them when practical. At breaks, check areas that have rubbed before and pay attention to warmth or tenderness.

- 𝟭𝟬𝟬% 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻 – Made with genuine sheepskin and soft fleece from 100% Australian wool, these insoles provide naturally warm, soft and cozy comfort underfoot on cold days.
- 𝗖𝗨𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗧𝗛 & 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗫. 𝟭𝟳 𝗠𝗠 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗘 – The multi-layer design provides soft, warming cushioning underfoot. As a reference, overall thickness is about 17 mm when the wool is fully lofted. Because natural wool can vary slightly in pile height and density, small differences in thickness are normal. The fuller profile requires enough room inside the shoe.
- 𝟯-𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 – Wool fleece, genuine sheepskin leather and a wool felt base form the three-layer structure of the insole. A stitched edge holds the layers securely together and helps maintain the overall construction. Because the edge is stitched, do not trim the insoles.
- 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗪𝗢𝗢𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗧 & 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 – Natural wool can absorb moisture and help support a comfortable in-shoe climate. Packaging and transit can compress the fleece, so it may look flatter at first. After unpacking, air the insoles briefly and gently shake or fluff the wool to help restore its natural loft. If damp, allow them to air-dry naturally.
- 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗘𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛 𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠 – Suitable for winter boots, snow boots, work boots and slippers with enough interior space. If your footwear already fits snugly, check the available room before ordering to make sure it can accommodate a fuller insole. Each pack contains 1 pair.
At the first sign of a hot spot, stop and protect it with paper medical tape, moleskin or a padded blister dressing. Also check whether lacing, slippage or pressure is causing the rubbing. If the same spot keeps returning, a covering alone will not correct the underlying fit or lacing issue. REI’s blister guidance covers prevention and care.
Keep feet and boots free of irritants
- Keep toenails trimmed.
- Keep socks and feet clean when practical.
- Shake rocks, sand and dirt out of boots before setting off; small debris can irritate skin over time.
These simple checks are included in REI’s hiking injury prevention advice.

If a blister forms
Protect the area and avoid removing the blister roof: the American Academy of Dermatology explains that it protects the raw skin beneath as it heals. Keep the area clean, and seek professional care if you notice signs of infection or other concerning symptoms. A dressing protects skin; it does not solve a boot that persistently rubs (American Academy of Dermatology: blister prevention and treatment).
