You can scan paper with the phone you already have: use Apple Notes or Files on an iPhone or iPad, or Google Drive on Android or iOS. These apps detect or capture the page, let you adjust its edges, and save a digital copy. Review the crop and every page before you finish.
Choose where you want the scan to go
Pick the app based on where you want to find the finished file. Notes keeps a scan inside a note, Files lets you choose a file location, and Google Drive saves it to Drive. The available file-format controls differ between apps and platforms.

Scan with Apple Notes
- Open a note or create one.
- Tap the attachment control, then choose Scan Documents.
- Position the page in the camera view. Let automatic capture take the scan, or trigger capture manually if needed.
- Adjust the page corners if the detected crop is off, then keep the scan.
- For a multi-page document, scan additional pages in the same session. Finish when all pages are captured; the scan remains in the note.
Notes is a convenient choice when the scan belongs with written notes or other information in the same note.

Scan with Apple Files
- Open Files and tap the More menu.
- Choose Scan Documents.
- Frame the page and capture it automatically or manually.
- Adjust the corners, keep the page, and add further pages if needed.
- Finish the scan, choose a location, and save.
Choose Files when you want to place the scan directly in a file location rather than attach it to a note.
Scan with Google Drive
Google’s Drive Help describes scanning receipts, letters, and billing statements into searchable PDFs stored in Drive. The controls differ slightly between Android and iPhone or iPad.

Android
- Open Google Drive and tap the camera icon to open the scanner.
- Frame the document and capture it.
- Review the crop. Use the available crop or rotate, filter, and clean controls as needed. Retake or delete a poor capture instead of keeping it.
- Tap the control to add another page if the document has more than one.
- Name the scan, choose PDF or JPG, optionally select a Drive folder, and save.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Drive and tap Add, then Scan, or use the camera icon if shown.
- Frame and capture the document.
- Review and adjust the crop; use available filters or cleanup controls if they help.
- Add pages in the same scan session when needed, then name the file, optionally choose a Drive folder, and save.
Google’s iOS help describes scans as searchable PDFs but does not list the same explicit PDF/JPG selector documented for Android. Check the save options shown in your app rather than assuming both platforms offer identical controls. See Google Drive’s Android scanning instructions and its iPhone and iPad instructions.
Get a clear, complete scan
- Set the paper on a flat, contrasting surface so the page edges are easy to distinguish.
- Keep the whole page inside the camera view. Avoid cropping off printed edges.
- Use even light, and keep your hand or phone from casting a shadow over small receipt text.
- If automatic capture misses an edge or selects the page poorly, switch to manual capture where available and correct the crop.
- Before leaving the scan flow, inspect the preview: check all edges, small totals and dates, legibility, and the presence and order of every page.
These are practical capture tips, not a promise of a particular resolution or accuracy. The vendor instructions describe framing, crop adjustment, and retake controls, but do not publish a measured lighting or resolution threshold.

Name and file the scan so you can find it later
Use a meaningful filename, such as 2026-10-04_grocery_receipt or 2026-10-04_insurance_letter, and put it somewhere predictable. Those filename examples are suggestions, not required formats. Drive allows a custom name or suggested title and an optional folder; Files asks you to choose a location. In Notes, give the note a useful title and keep the scan with it.
Confirm the save completed and that the file appears where you expected. If the record is sensitive, review the sharing and account settings for the storage location you use. Google says Drive content is not used for advertising; that statement is specifically about advertising and does not describe every privacy or security property.

When a camera photo is enough
A regular camera photo can work for a quick reference, but a scan flow is more useful when you want page-edge correction, a multi-page document in one file, or a saved PDF. For an occasional receipt or letter, the built-in app workflows need no additional hardware. A stand may make repeated captures easier to hold steady, but it is optional.
Google announced scanner updates on Android and expansion to iOS on November 28, 2023, including automatic capture, an improved viewfinder, and camera-roll import. Its announcement said title suggestions were available only in the US at that time; current help mentions suggested titles but does not establish their present geographic availability.
