Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChromeOS supports ZIP files, and you can usually open one with the Chromebook’s built-in Files app. Open Files, go to the folder or storage location containing the ZIP, then double-click it. If you want to unpack a group of files into a folder, right-click the folder and select Extract all. Google lists ZIP as a supported compressed format and documents the Files app workflow.
Open the ZIP file in Files
- Open the Files app.
- Select the location where the ZIP is saved, such as Downloads, another folder under My files, Google Drive, or a connected storage device.
- Find the ZIP file and double-click it. Its contents appear in Files.
- To open an item inside the archive, double-click that item.
- To extract a group of zipped files into one folder, right-click the folder and select Extract all.
These are Google’s documented steps for opening and extracting files on a Chromebook. See Google’s Files app instructions.
If double-clicking the ZIP does not work
Confirm the file and location
In Files, check the location where you expect the archive to be saved. If you downloaded it, look in Downloads; if it is on a USB drive or another connected device, select that device in the sidebar. Make sure the file has a .zip extension and note any message ChromeOS displays. Google lists .zip and .rar among the compressed file types supported on Chromebooks. Check Google’s supported file types.
For an “Unknown file type” message, try Google’s Drive route
Google’s guidance for an unknown file type is to check whether ChromeOS supports the type, then try saving the file to Google Drive and opening it in a browser or web application. That guidance is not a diagnosis of why a particular ZIP failed; note the exact extension and error before trying another route. Google’s file-type troubleshooting steps.

If the archive is on an external device
Treat a device that ChromeOS cannot read separately from the ZIP itself. Google recommends checking whether the external device’s filesystem is supported and making sure ChromeOS is up to date. Supported formats include FAT variants, HFS+ (journaled HFS+ is read-only), ISO9660 (read-only), MTP, NTFS, and UDF (read-only). See Google’s external-device compatibility guidance.
If ChromeOS suggests reformatting an unrecognized device, do not proceed until you have backed up its contents: formatting erases stored files. Google’s external-device help.

Check eligibility before relying on a third-party file-system app
If you need an app to access another storage service, Play Store availability depends on the Chromebook and its settings. Google says only some Chromebooks support the Play Store, and work or school administrators may restrict it; compatible file-system apps may appear in Files. If the Chromebook is managed and the file type is unsupported, Google recommends contacting the administrator. Google’s Android app guidance and file-type help.

The official guidance explains the normal ZIP workflow and general file-type and external-device troubleshooting, but it does not identify the cause of a specific archive failure or establish a universal maximum ZIP size. Before asking for help, record the exact error message, the file extension, and where the file is stored. Those details help distinguish an unsupported file type from an issue involving the storage location or connected device.
