If VS Code slows down or consumes unusually high CPU or memory in a large project, first identify when the spike occurs. Folder discovery, file watching, search, language analysis, extensions, and remote file polling are separate workloads, so the useful fix is usually to reduce the specific work your workspace does—not to add every exclusion or raise a system limit by default.
Diagnose when VS Code becomes slow
Note whether resource use rises mainly when you open the folder, while typing or waiting for IntelliSense, during ongoing file changes, or only in a remote or WSL window. These clues help narrow down which workload to investigate; VS Code does not identify one universal cause. Its FAQ specifically notes that discovering project files in a folder with many files can consume substantial CPU and make the editor slow to respond. Microsoft’s VS Code FAQ describes that folder-opening case.
- Mostly on folder open: investigate project-file discovery and unnecessary workspace scope.
- During ongoing changes or an ENOSPC warning on Linux: look at file watching and watcher limits.
- While editing or waiting for IntelliSense: check the language service’s project scope.
- Only in one remote or WSL window: check remote file-watching behavior.
- Associated with an extension host or language extension: isolate extensions rather than assuming one is at fault.
Choose the exclusion that matches the workload
VS Code has separate controls for Explorer visibility and search, text search alone, file watching, and language-project analysis. The settings documentation explains user and workspace settings; workspace-specific settings are stored in the workspace’s .vscode directory and can differ from your user settings. Confirm which scope is active before changing a setting. See the VS Code settings documentation.

These controls are not interchangeable: an Explorer or search exclusion does not by itself establish that a directory is excluded from file watching or language analysis. Check the documentation for the setting you intend to use: settings, IntelliSense, and JavaScript project configuration.

Start with generated and non-source folders
Common candidates to review include node_modules, build output such as dist, caches, and large data directories. Exclude a folder only if the project does not need VS Code to discover, watch, search, or analyze its contents for the task at hand. The JavaScript documentation recommends excluding files that are not part of the source project, including generated output. Verify the consequences for your own tools and workflows before applying an exclusion.
Fix Linux ENOSPC watcher warnings
The warning “Visual Studio Code is unable to watch for file changes in this large workspace” with error ENOSPC means the file watcher has run out of file handles. On Linux, begin by excluding large directories that do not need watching—for example, a Python .venv—using files.watcherExclude. Other running applications can also consume file handles, so the warning does not necessarily mean the project alone is responsible.

- Check the current inotify watch limit: run
cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watchesin a Linux terminal. - Reduce unnecessary watches: add appropriate paths to
files.watcherExcludeand confirm file-change detection still works where needed. - Consider a higher limit only if needed: VS Code’s Linux setup guide documents
fs.inotify.max_user_watches=524288as a possible configuration and gives platform-specific instructions. Distribution details differ, so follow that guide for your Linux distribution rather than applying a generic command.
Microsoft’s Linux installation documentation estimates that each file watch uses 1,080 bytes; if all 524,288 watches are consumed, that is an upper bound of around 540 MiB for watches. This is a conditional estimate, not a measurement of VS Code’s total memory use. The same guidance notes that memory-constrained systems may need a lower limit.
Reduce language-service work in large projects
IntelliSense may be partially disabled in very large workspaces for performance reasons. If the slowdown is tied to language features, check whether generated output or dependency folders are being treated as project source. For JavaScript and TypeScript, use the project’s jsconfig.json exclude configuration to omit non-source files from language-project analysis. VS Code specifically discusses excluding node_modules and build output such as dist.

Use files.exclude or search.exclude when the goal is Explorer visibility or text search; use language-project exclusions when the goal is analysis. One setting should not be assumed to solve all three kinds of work. See the IntelliSense guidance and jsconfig documentation.
Isolate extension-related spikes
VS Code uses safeguards and lazy activation intended to prevent extensions from unnecessarily affecting startup, UI operations, CPU, and memory. That does not rule out an extension in a particular workspace, nor does it establish that extensions are generally responsible. If a spike appears associated with an extension host or language extension, test the same workspace condition with extensions isolated, then restore extensions in a controlled way to identify whether the behavior follows a specific extension or combination. Use polling advice only for remote workspaces
Polling-based file watching can affect performance in large remote workspaces. For large WSL workspaces, VS Code’s remote troubleshooting guidance suggests increasing remote.WSL.fileWatcher.pollingInterval and controlling watched folders with files.watcherExclude. These are remote and WSL-specific considerations, not universal fixes for local Windows, macOS, or Linux projects. Consult Remote Development troubleshooting before changing remote settings.
Retest after each targeted change
- Change one relevant exclusion or setting at a time, at the narrowest scope that fits the project.
- Reopen the workspace or repeat the action that triggered the slowdown, such as opening the folder, editing a file, or generating changes.
- Check whether CPU or memory behavior improved and whether expected search results, Explorer visibility, file-change detection, or IntelliSense still work.
- If the symptom remains, revert changes that did not help and investigate the next workload suggested by when the spike occurs.
