You can also extract a group of ZIP archives into a folder with Extract all. A separate app is only worth considering if the built-in workflow does not cover your file or needs.
Open or extract ZIP files with the Chromebook Files app
- Open the Files app from the Launcher.
- Find the ZIP archive and double-click it to view its contents.
- Double-click an individual file inside the archive to open it.
Google also documents extracting a group of ZIP archives into one folder: right-click the folder containing them and choose Extract all. See Google’s Chromebook Files instructions for opening, saving, and deleting files.
Create a ZIP archive without installing an app
In Files, select the files or folder you want to compress, right-click the selection, and choose Zip. This creates a ZIP archive using ChromeOS’s built-in file manager; no separate archive app is needed for that task.
What about RAR and other compressed formats?
Google’s supported-file list includes both .zip and .rar for Chromebooks. However, Google’s detailed open-and-extract instructions cover ZIP files, not a step-by-step RAR workflow. Check the file type and the available options on your Chromebook rather than assuming every format works just like ZIP. The supported types are listed on Google’s Chromebook file-types page.

When an Android archive app may help
A third-party Android app may be an alternative if you need a format or workflow that the built-in Files option does not handle. The available evidence does not establish a particular app as the best choice, so check its listed archive formats and functions—such as extraction, archive creation, or password-protected archive support—before installing it.
- Check whether your Chromebook offers Google Play in Settings.
- Search for the specific app in Play Store on that Chromebook and confirm it is available for your device.
- If this is a work or school Chromebook, check with the administrator if installation is blocked.
Google Play is available only on some Chromebooks, administrators can restrict app installation, and some Android apps do not work on some Chromebook models. The Chromium Project also describes Android app availability as device-specific; it says devices launched in or after 2019 support Android apps unless otherwise specified, while older supported models are identified individually.
