The best TV picture settings for PS4 gaming depend on your television, but a dependable starting point is to select the TV’s Game picture mode, enable the right HDMI signal options, and configure the PS4’s video output. Then calibrate HDR on the console and make only restrained, model-specific picture adjustments. There is no reliable set of brightness, contrast, color, or sharpness numbers that suits every TV.
Start with the TV’s Game picture mode
Choose Game mode when responsive controls matter. PlayStation’s PS4 Pro FAQ advises considering input latency when choosing a gaming TV and notes that many televisions provide a Game Mode to reduce it. Sony’s support guidance also recommends Game mode to reduce input lag. The effect varies by TV; there is no universal latency figure, and enabling the mode may affect other features, including HDR.
Game mode is a useful starting preset, not proof that every picture control is already ideal. Make any further adjustments while this mode is active, since other picture modes may use different processing.
Set up the HDMI connection for HDR or 4K
Check the TV manual to find which HDMI input supports the signal you want. For HDR, enable the TV’s HDR-compatible or enhanced HDMI signal option on that input, if required. The label varies by manufacturer. For example, Samsung calls its QLED setting Input Signal Plus; that name is specific to Samsung, not a universal TV menu label.

- Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.
PlayStation lists these requirements for PS4 HDR: an HDR10-compatible 2K or 4K TV, a Premium HDMI cable, HDR-enabled content, and PS4 system software version 7.0 or later. Its HDR setup guidance says to connect the console directly to the TV rather than routing it through a receiver or switch box for HDR output. Check the cable and every device in the signal path before buying anything; a new cable is not automatically necessary if the existing setup supports the intended signal.
Configure the PS4’s video output and calibrate HDR
- On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
- Set HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic.
- Select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration. If a game offers its own HDR calibration, use that too; HDR support depends on the specific game or streaming app.
- Open Video Output Information in the same settings area to check whether the connected display is identified as HDR-supported.
PlayStation states that PS4 consoles support HDR output for gameplay and video streaming. The console’s resolution capability depends on its model:

On PS4 Pro, Automatic selects the highest available resolution according to the display and content. Supported manual options include 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB; some games also require enabling 4K in their own settings. See PlayStation’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDR guide for output details.
Adjust picture controls cautiously
There are no universal brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, tint, black-level, or local-dimming values established for all TVs. Appropriate settings can vary with the TV model and firmware, whether the signal is SDR or HDR, the room, and the content. Start with the TV manual’s guidance for your exact model, then judge the picture using the games and conditions in which you play.

After HDR calibration, check that dark detail remains visible and bright areas do not lose important detail. If you change a TV control, adjust it in small increments and reassess the image rather than copying numbers from another model. The available sources do not establish numeric targets that would make such values dependable across different televisions.
Leave RGB Range on its default unless you see a mismatch
Do not change the PS4’s RGB Range simply because one setting sounds preferable. The PS4 user guide says to change RGB Range only when an HDMI device does not send RGB-range information correctly. If the TV’s black-level or range setting does not correspond to the console output, the picture may look wrong; diagnose that specific mismatch rather than applying blanket advice such as “always Full” or “always Limited.”

Troubleshoot an HDR or 4K signal that is missing
If the TV does not detect HDR
- Confirm that the TV supports HDR10 and that the connected HDMI input is HDR-capable.
- Enable the input’s HDR or enhanced-signal setting in the TV menu. For Samsung QLED TVs, Samsung’s HDR setup guidance says to enable Input Signal Plus for the HDMI input in use.
- Connect the PS4 directly to the TV for HDR, and verify that the HDMI cable supports the required signal.
- Set PS4 HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic, then check Video Output Information for HDR support.
If a PS4 Pro does not output 4K
- Check that the specific TV input supports 4K and that the display supports 4K/60Hz.
- Check that each device between the console and display, if any, supports the intended signal. For HDR setup, PlayStation recommends a direct connection to the TV.
- Use Automatic or a supported 2160p output option, and check whether the game requires a separate 4K setting.
- Consult PlayStation’s PS4 Pro guide: if the display does not support 4K/60Hz, the signal may be scaled down to 2K/60Hz.
How to compare picture setups
When deciding whether a setup works for you, assess three things rather than comparing isolated menu numbers:
