Use the Chromebook’s built-in Files app: select the files or folder, right-click, and choose Zip. To inspect the archive later, double-click it; to place its contents in a regular folder, choose Extract all.
How to create a ZIP file on a Chromebook

Open the Files app.

In the left pane, open the location containing the files or folder you want to archive.

Select a folder or file. To select several separate files, hold Ctrl while selecting each one.

Right-click the selected item or items and choose Zip.

ChromeOS creates one ZIP file containing the selection. Google documents this built-in Files app workflow in its Chromebook file-management instructions; a separate archive utility is not needed for this task.
Browse a ZIP or extract its contents
Choose the action that matches what you need to do with the archive:

Open or browse it: In Files, double-click the ZIP. It appears in the left pane, where you can double-click an individual file to open it. When you are finished, you can choose Eject to remove the ZIP from the list of folders shown on the left.

Put the files into a folder: Right-click the folder and choose Extract all. This extracts the group of archived files into a folder.

Which compressed file types can a Chromebook handle?
Google’s compatibility page lists .zip and .rar as compressed file types supported on Chromebooks. The documented creation steps, however, are specifically for making ZIP archives; support for opening a file type does not mean the Files app’s documented workflow creates that format. If a ZIP will not extract
Google’s instructions explain the built-in ZIP and extraction steps but do not specify archive-size limits, compression ratios, encryption support, or behavior for every storage location. If a ZIP stored in Drive does not extract, one Chromebook Community response suggests moving it out of Drive and trying again. Treat that as a possible troubleshooting check, not a confirmed Google limitation or a universal fix; the discussion is community advice.
