Photos saved in the phone’s internal storage remain there. A replacement card does not automatically contain the old card’s photos, so copy them elsewhere before switching cards if you want to keep them available.
Where are your Samsung photos stored?
A Galaxy phone can store photos in internal storage or on a microSD card, depending on the device and settings. The Gallery app may show photos from both locations, so seeing an image in Gallery does not tell you which storage holds the file.
To check, open My Files and look in Internal storage and SD card. Samsung also documents creating an album on an SD card in Gallery and moving images into it, though the available controls vary by phone and software version. See Samsung’s microSD card guide and Samsung UK’s SD card instructions.
What happens when you remove the original card?
Files saved on the removed card remain on it, provided the card and files are still readable. While it is out, the phone cannot display or open those files from the card. Reinsert the original card to make its files accessible again. Photos stored in internal storage are separate and remain on the phone.

Before physically removing a card, unmount it in Settings and wait until the phone has finished accessing it. Samsung’s US instructions give this path: Settings > Device care > Storage > More options > Storage settings > Unmount. Menu names and paths can differ by model, region, and software version. Samsung’s warning is direct: “Remember, you must unmount the microSD card before removing it.” Samsung Gulf also warns that removing a card without unmounting can cause data loss or file-system errors: Samsung Gulf’s removal instructions.
What happens when you replace the card?
A replacement card does not inherit the files on the old one. The old photos remain on the old card unless they were copied or moved elsewhere; inserting a new card will not make those photos appear on it. Copy the files before changing cards, or retrieve them from another backup.

Use Copy to keep an original in place as well as create a second copy. Use Move to relocate the files, which means the original location no longer holds them. Samsung’s transfer guide explains phone-to-phone, computer, cloud, USB OTG, Quick Share/Nearby Share, and Smart Switch options; it notes that Secure Folder media cannot be transferred using the methods described there: Samsung’s media-transfer guide.
How to preserve photos before changing cards
- Check where the files are. With the original card inserted, open My Files and inspect the SD card as well as internal storage.
- Choose a destination. You can copy files to internal storage, a computer, a supported cloud service, or another supported transfer destination. A replacement SD card is another option if the phone supports one.
- Copy or move the files. In My Files, select the photos or folders, choose Copy or Move, then select the destination. Availability and menu labels vary by device.
- Confirm the transfer. Open the destination and check that the files are present before formatting or disposing of the original card.
- Unmount the card. Use the SD-card controls in Settings for your model, wait for unmounting to finish, and then remove the card.
If photos disappear after a card change
- If you still have the original card: Reinsert it after unmounting any card currently in the phone. Look in My Files under SD card, and check Gallery as well.
- If you used a new card: The old files will not be on it unless you copied or moved them there. Check the original card, internal storage, or the destination you used for a backup.
- If a file is missing from Gallery: Check My Files, too. Samsung says photos that do not appear in Gallery may be hidden, so Gallery alone cannot confirm that a file has been deleted.
- If the original card is unreadable: Do not format it if you want to preserve or recover its contents. Samsung warns that formatting erases data stored on the card. The cited Samsung guidance does not establish a recovery procedure or guarantee that files on a damaged card can be recovered; avoid further writes or formatting and seek an appropriate recovery option.
Check card compatibility before buying a replacement
Not every Galaxy phone or tablet has a microSD slot, and supported maximum capacity differs by model. Check the specifications or support guide for your exact device before choosing a card. Samsung’s US guide lists the general capacity classes as microSD up to 2 GB, microSDHC over 2 GB through 32 GB, and microSDXC over 32 GB through 2 TB; these are card-standard ranges, not a guarantee that a particular Galaxy model accepts every capacity. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video and says regular microSD or microSDHC can be sufficient for less demanding still photography. The device’s own compatibility limit takes precedence. See Samsung’s compatibility and card-format guidance.

Storage controls also differ. Some supported Galaxy phones let you choose the SD card as the Camera app’s save location, but that option is not available on every model. Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, so a removable card is not merged into internal storage. Confirm support and instructions for the exact model and region; Samsung’s Japan guide, for example, lists regional model support and transfer steps: Samsung Japan’s SD transfer instructions.
