Start by identifying which layer is failing: a Raspberry Pi that never reaches its operating system has a boot problem; one that starts but cannot join a network has a Wi-Fi problem; and one that runs but plays no sound has an audio-routing problem. Record your Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS release, radio or audio hardware, and what happens after power-on before changing settings. The right fix depends on those details.
First, identify where the failure happens
- No operating system startup: Treat this as a boot or boot-media issue. Do not assume a Wi-Fi or audio setting caused it.
- The Pi starts, but cannot connect: Check wireless setup, regulatory country, credentials, and supported router band.
- The Pi starts, but the radio is silent: Check the system’s selected audio output before changing radio-app settings.
Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation explains that config.txt is read by firmware before the Arm CPU and Linux initialize. It can affect early hardware configuration, but it is not a universal cure for a Pi that will not boot. Boot symptoms, LED meanings, and power requirements vary by model and hardware; the available official guidance does not establish one diagnostic sequence or voltage threshold for every build. Start with checks appropriate to your exact model and known-good boot media and power supply. If replacing a card becomes necessary, check model requirements and preserve recoverable data first.
Why won’t my Raspberry Pi connect to Wi-Fi?
Set up wireless for a headless first boot
If you are configuring a Pi without a monitor or keyboard, Raspberry Pi’s getting-started instructions recommend entering wireless credentials in Raspberry Pi Imager’s advanced settings. If wireless was not configured there, use Ethernet as a wired fallback where available, then configure networking from the running system.
Check the WLAN country and supported band
On dual-band-capable Pi devices, wireless networking remains disabled until a WLAN country is assigned. This is a regulatory setting that governs legal channels and power behavior, not a signal-strength adjustment. Set the correct country using Imager, the desktop network controls, raspi-config, or the documented nmcli route in Raspberry Pi’s configuration guide. Also confirm that your specific Pi or wireless adapter supports the router’s band; some models and adapters do not support 5 GHz.

Use the network setup that matches your OS
Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and later use NetworkManager by default. The older method of placing wpa_supplicant.conf in the boot partition for first-boot Wi-Fi setup is not available on Bookworm and later. Use the current desktop network controls or NetworkManager tools such as nmcli instead. Raspberry Pi’s network configuration documentation covers the current approach.
If the interface says that no access points were found, wait briefly for NetworkManager to scan, then check these items before considering an adapter replacement:

Why is there no sound from my Raspberry Pi?
Choose the system output device
Check where the operating system is sending sound before troubleshooting the radio application. In the desktop, use the volume selector to choose an output; alternatively, run sudo raspi-config and open System options > Audio. Raspberry Pi OS normally sends audio to HDMI 1. If no HDMI output is available, it uses the headphone jack or a connected USB audio device. The ports available depend on the Pi model. These selection options and defaults are described in the official audio configuration guide.
Match audio instructions to the OS release
Raspberry Pi OS used PulseAudio before Bookworm; current documentation describes switching between PulseAudio and PipeWire through raspi-config. Avoid copying an old PulseAudio-only command into a current installation without confirming it applies. If the expected output device is selected but the radio application remains silent, application routing and mixer state are a separate layer; the official material cited here does not specify app-by-app repair steps.

Investigate analog hiss or a change after editing config.txt
For hiss from analog audio, Raspberry Pi’s config.txt reference documents disable_audio_dither=1 as a way to disable the default dither behavior. It also documents audio_pwm_mode and pwm_sample_bits; do not set pwm_sample_bits below 8, because the documentation warns that audio becomes nonfunctional below that value. These are specialized configuration options, not first steps for every silent system.
HDMI audio is enabled by default on models with HDMI output. If sound disappeared after a configuration edit, inspect the dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d line in /boot/firmware/config.txt for noaudio, which disables HDMI audio when appended to that line. Raspberry Pi OS uses /boot/firmware/config.txt for firmware configuration; changes take effect after reboot. Treat edits there as firmware-level changes and avoid changing unrelated audio parameters without a specific reason.

When should you move beyond built-in Wi-Fi or audio?
Choose the next step based on the failing layer, Pi model, OS release, available ports, and what the radio application needs. A USB audio device is one possible output path, and an external wireless adapter may be relevant if the built-in interface is unsuitable, but neither should be the first purchase: establish why the existing path fails and verify compatibility for the exact hardware first.
