In F.E.A.R., soldiers coordinate and re-plan; in Alien: Isolation, the Xenomorph hunts through its senses while a director manages pressure; and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor makes rivals react to the player and the world. For co-op pacing that changes around a group, The Anacrusis is a different kind of fit. These are notable examples, not a ranked list: “smart AI” can mean several distinct things, and the available sources do not provide a standardized comparison.
What does “smart AI” mean in these games?
It does not necessarily mean machine learning. The behaviors described here come from designed systems such as tactical planning, senses, behavior trees, difficulty rules, and encounter directors. To choose a game, ask what responds, what prompts it, and what actually changes: an enemy’s next move, a hunt’s pressure, a rival’s relationship with you, or the shape and support of an encounter.
| Game | What responds | What prompts or changes |
|---|---|---|
| F.E.A.R. | Enemy squads | Tactical circumstances change their plans and routes. |
| Alien: Isolation | The Alien and a pacing director | Sensory detection and player behavior shape the hunt; the director manages pressure. |
| Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor | Persistent rival NPCs | Rivals are designed to react to the player, the environment, and one another. |
| The Anacrusis | A co-op encounter director | Player condition and encounter pacing can affect routes, enemy mix, and health-item support. |
| Aliens: Fireteam Elite | Difficulty settings and encounter variables | Selected difficulty tunes factors such as enemy health, creature mix, revives, and resources; this is not the same as enemies learning your habits. |
Which games have enemies that adapt in distinctive ways?
F.E.A.R.: squads that plan and coordinate
F.E.A.R. is the clearest pick if you want enemies to behave like a team rather than a collection of targets. A GDC session description says soldiers use suppression fire while allies advance, form search parties, and use grenades to flush out the player. Its account describes a finite-state machine with three states and A* planning for both actions and pathfinding. Soldiers can re-plan when a tactic stops working: block a door and an enemy may shoot through a window or look for another entrance. GDC: “Three States and a Plan: The AI of F.E.A.R.”
The appeal is tactical coordination and changing responses to the immediate situation—not a claim that enemies learn a player’s long-term habits. Choose it if flanking, suppression, and being pushed out of a position are the kind of intelligence you notice most.

Alien: Isolation: a sensing hunter and a separate pacing director
Alien: Isolation combines two systems. A behavior tree governs the Xenomorph’s hunting and reactions to the world, while a separate director manages pacing and can steer the creature toward the player’s general area. The director does not give it the player’s exact location: the Alien must still find the player through its own senses, including sight and hearing. A “menace gauge” tracks the intensity of its presence and can send it backstage into vents for a while. Game Developer: technical analysis of the Alien’s AI
That division helps explain why the hunt can feel adaptive without the creature detecting you instantly from anywhere. The analysis also describes behaviors such as searching lockers or entering smaller vents becoming available after the player repeatedly escapes that way. This creates a learning effect through designed behavior; it is not evidence of a machine-learning model trained on the player.

Difficulty also affects how responsive the Alien’s senses are and how long it stays away. Lead game designer Gary Napper described the Alien as driven by “senses and awareness levels” and by systems that “can adapt and change according to what the player does.” Game Developer: interview with lead game designer Gary Napper
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor: rivals that react and create stories
The Nemesis System is a fit if “smart NPCs” means adversaries with a continuing place in the player’s story. Monolith’s postmortem describes a design goal of making NPCs react to the player, the environment, and each other, with the aim of empowering players to create and share their own stories. The work involved writing and voice, AI, animation, cameras, design, UI, and level design. Game Developer: Monolith’s Shadow of Mordor postmortem

Think of it as reactive rival encounters and the possibility of memorable, emergent anecdotes—not a guarantee that every player gets a wholly unique story.
The Anacrusis: a director that adjusts co-op pacing
The Anacrusis focuses on the encounter as a whole rather than claiming that each enemy studies an individual player. In an Unreal Engine interview, developer Chet Faliszek describes Director 2.0 building a player profile and adjusting pressure through more than enemy counts. It can steer players away from their route toward items, surprise them from behind, vary the enemy mix, and put health on the path when someone is hurt. The developers distinguish perceived intensity from combat difficulty: common enemies keep the same number of plasma-rifle shots to kill and the same melee damage. That makes this a useful example of changing pacing and support without secretly changing those core combat values.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is adaptive behavior different from difficulty tuning?
An enemy reacting to your actions and a difficulty setting changing encounter variables are related ideas, but they are not interchangeable. Alien: Isolation is described as combining player-responsive behaviors with difficulty-dependent changes to sensory responsiveness and time away from the player. Aliens: Fireteam Elite offers a contrast: Cold Iron Studios describes difficulty as tuning enemy health, the types and numbers of creatures, revive opportunities, medkit availability, ammunition, and friendly-fire damage. That establishes adjustable challenge, not individual enemies learning how you play. Game Developer: Cold Iron Studios on Aliens: Fireteam Elite difficulty

Which game should you choose?
- For coordinated firefights: F.E.A.R., where enemies use squad tactics and re-plan around obstacles.
- For a tense hunt: Alien: Isolation, where the Alien senses and searches while a director shapes its pressure.
- For reactive rivals: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, whose Nemesis design targets responses among NPCs, the player, and the environment.
- For changing co-op encounters: The Anacrusis, where a director can alter routes, enemy mix, and health support.
- For difficulty-based encounter tuning: Aliens: Fireteam Elite, where settings change several combat and resource variables.
These examples answer different versions of “What games have enemies that learn how you play?” The strongest evidence for learning-like behavior is in Alien: Isolation’s unlocking responses to repeated escape tactics; the other examples are better described as tactical re-planning, reactive rival design, or director-managed pacing. The cited developer accounts and technical analysis explain those systems, but do not establish a universal smartest-AI winner.
