Drop In does create a real privacy trade-off: an authorized person can connect without you answering, and a supported Echo Show may use its camera. You can review permissions, disable Drop In, or turn off video on supported devices.
Why is my Alexa light green?
The meaning depends on how the light behaves and which Echo device you have. Amazon’s guidance distinguishes an incoming call from a call or Drop In already in progress:
- Pulsing green on an Echo speaker: an incoming call. Amazon’s speaker-light guide says a pulsing green light means the device is receiving a call.
- Spinning green on an Echo speaker: an active call or active Drop In, according to Amazon’s guide.
- Green on an Echo with a screen: a call or Drop In is active even if you have left the call screen. See Amazon’s screen-device indicator guide.
So a green light is a communication-status indicator, not a general-purpose sign that Alexa is recording ambient conversation. If it appears unexpectedly, Amazon recommends ending the call, checking voice history for a misheard request that may have started a call or Drop In, and disabling Drop In or Communications if you do not want those features. Its troubleshooting steps are at Green Light Won’t Turn Off On Your Echo Device.
Does a green light mean Alexa is listening?
Not by itself. Amazon describes a separate signal for wake-word activity: when an Echo detects its wake word, an indicator signals that audio is being recorded to stream to the cloud. The green light described above signals a call or Drop In, rather than ordinary wake-word recording. Amazon says Alexa interactions and related information may be processed and retained in the cloud for tasks such as responding, transcription, and service improvement; see the Alexa Terms of Use and Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs.

Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Can someone Drop In on my Echo without me answering?
Yes, if Drop In is enabled and the person or device has permission. Amazon describes Drop In as an optional intercom-style feature: when a Drop In arrives, the audio or video connection starts automatically, without the recipient answering. The recipient hears a tone and sees an indicator, according to Amazon’s Drop In explanation and device FAQs.
Household and contact access are different
Household Drop In can connect supported devices associated with your Amazon household, including devices that are not physically in the same location. Contact Drop In requires permission between both parties. But permission can extend beyond the individual you selected: Amazon’s Terms of Use, section S-1.5, say that granting permission to yourself also grants it to household members, and granting it to a contact also extends it to that contact’s household. When reviewing access, account and household scope both matter.

Can Alexa Drop In turn on the camera?
On a supported Echo Show, Drop In can include video if the camera is available. Amazon says the caller initially sees a privacy-blurred view that transitions to clear video. The person receiving the Drop In can end the session or turn off video while continuing with audio. Amazon also describes a recently active indicator on some Echo Show and Echo Spot devices and in the Alexa app for people with Drop In permission; on Echo Show, it is based on Alexa interactions and motion sensors. Details are in Amazon’s device FAQs.
Camera controls vary by model. For example, Amazon’s guidance for the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) explains camera settings and notes that turning the camera off affects camera-dependent functions such as Live View. Check your specific model’s settings before relying on a camera control to preserve other features.

What does Amazon say about call encryption?
Amazon says default Alexa calls and Drop Ins are end-to-end encrypted. It also says that if enhanced communication features, such as group Drop In, are enabled, calls are temporarily decrypted, processed, and re-encrypted in the cloud. Amazon states it does not retain call audio or information about the content of calls. These are Amazon’s statements in its Terms of Use and device FAQs, not a claim that all Alexa voice data is end-to-end encrypted. Alexa interactions are treated separately as described above; Amazon’s published statements are not an independent audit of implementation.

Use the Alexa app to review communication settings for the relevant device and contacts. Menu labels can change, so look in the app’s device and communication settings rather than relying on a fixed navigation path.
