Keep cable weight and movement off the Ethernet plug: plan a smooth route, support the cable near its endpoints, leave enough slack for normal use, and avoid tight bends or compressed bundles. For four-pair twisted-pair cable, ANSI/TIA-568.0-E gives a general minimum inside bend radius of four times the cable’s diameter; the cable or connector manufacturer may require more.
Plan a route that does not pull on the connector
Run the cable so it reaches the jack or device without being taut or pulled sideways. Leave enough slack for ordinary movement, servicing, and plugging or unplugging, but do not leave a heavy loop hanging from the connector. Support the route so the cable’s weight and incidental movement are carried by the supports rather than the plug or termination. TIA says stress from suspended runs and tightly cinched bundles should be minimized (ANSI/TIA-568.0-E, approved March 24, 2020).
Keep the path smooth around corners, doorways, and openings. A tight turn can deform the cable even when the connector itself appears intact. Check the cable’s printed specifications or manufacturer documentation before routing it; a larger manufacturer-specified bend radius takes precedence over the general rule below.
How tight can you bend an Ethernet cable?
For four-pair balanced twisted-pair cable, ANSI/TIA-568.0-E specifies a minimum inside bend radius of four times the cable diameter, both during installation and afterward. It gives the same four-diameter minimum for four-pair cord cable. Measure the radius from the inside of the curve, not across the full loop. For example, a cable with a 6 mm diameter needs at least a 24 mm inside radius under this rule. That example is simply four times the diameter, not a separate published cable specification.

This is a general rule, not a universal limit for every cable construction or connector. Follow a larger or more specific cable-maker requirement when one applies. The Ontario Government’s Category 6A project specification also references a four-diameter fallback while requiring manufacturer limits to be observed (GO-ITS 580TES); it applies in its provincial project context, not as a universal code.
Support the run without crushing it
Use cable supports, clips, or hook-and-loop cable ties to hold a route in place without flattening the jacket. TIA advises that cable bindings, if used, should be loosely fitted and easy to move. The Ontario Category 6A specification specifically identifies Velcro tie-wraps and warns against pressure that could deform the jacket or internal pair and conductor geometry (GO-ITS 580TES).

- Fit ties loosely; do not cinch zip ties tightly against the cable.
- Choose supports that carry cable weight without pinching or flattening the jacket.
- Arrange the route so supports preserve the required bend radius and keep load off the connector.
- Choose support material and fixings suitable for the mounting surface and installation environment.
Support spacing depends on the cable, installation, project specification, and applicable local requirements. Do not treat spacing guidance for coaxial cable as an Ethernet rule; check the Ethernet cable maker’s instructions and the applicable installation requirements.

During installation, ANSI/TIA-568.0-E sets a maximum pulling tension of 110 N (25 lbf) for four-pair balanced twisted-pair cable. This is an upper limit, not a force to aim for. Do not exceed the cable’s own pulling-strength rating, and obey a lower manufacturer limit if specified. If the cable snags or requires excessive force, stop and resolve the obstruction rather than pulling harder.

At a jack or plug, use the connecting hardware manufacturer’s termination instructions and keep the cable geometry as close as possible to the termination. For Categories 5e, 6, 6A, and 8, TIA-568.0-E lists a maximum pair untwist of 13 mm (0.5 in) at termination. This figure concerns pair untwist; it does not specify how far cable must extend into a boot or where a strain-relief clamp must sit.
There is no universal sourced distance for placing a strain-relief support from an Ethernet plug. A Siemens industrial LAN guide gives an approximately 1 m example in its own installation context, which should not be treated as a residential or office requirement (Siemens SCALANCE X-200 installation guide). Use the connector and cable maker’s instructions and the requirements for your installation.
