Use the systemd hardware database (hwdb) when you need to map a hardware identity or pattern to device properties. Some fixes involve both: hwdb supplies properties that later device-handling logic can consume.
What is the difference between udev rules and hwdb?
| Question | udev rules | hwdb |
|---|---|---|
| What does it match? | Device events and attributes, including properties and attributes on a device or its parent. | Hardware identifiers or patterns. |
| What does it do? | Applies assignments or event-related actions, such as setting permissions or properties, creating a symlink, or renaming a network interface. | Associates matching hardware with properties that other device-handling components can use. |
| When is it a good fit? | When the fix is “when this device is handled, do this.” | When the fix is “for hardware matching this identity, attach these properties.” |
These are connected mechanisms, not competing versions of the same configuration. The systemd project’s udev(7) manual describes the daemon receiving kernel events when devices are added, removed, or change state. Rules are evaluated against device information during that handling. hwdb provides static metadata mappings that can supply properties for later use.
When should you write a udev rule?
Choose a rule when the desired change is an event-time assignment or action. Typical goals include setting access permissions, adding a predictable symlink under /dev, setting a property, or renaming a network interface. A rule combines match keys with assignment keys; it should match the intended device and then make the requested change.
Before choosing match keys, inspect the device rather than assuming a vendor/product ID uniquely identifies it. Use udevadm info to examine stored device information and sysfs properties. The right match may depend on a property of the device itself or an attribute on its parent. Prefer identifiers that are stable on the target machine and specific enough not to affect other devices.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rule files are read from system, runtime, and local configuration directories and processed in lexical order. A file with the same name in a higher-priority location can replace another file rather than simply add to it. The exact directories, precedence details, and supported keys should be checked against the systemd documentation installed on the target distribution; see the udev(7) manual.
When should you add an hwdb entry?
Use hwdb when the change is fundamentally a static mapping from hardware identity to device properties. For example, libinput documents hwdb entries for configuring input devices by device name and by details such as DMI information or a modalias. Its guidance places local entries in /etc/udev/hwdb.d/, with an example filename such as 99-somename.hwdb. See libinput’s static device configuration guide.

Matching has a precision trade-off. A broad pattern may affect unintended hardware; an excessively specific pattern can stop matching after a firmware or system change. The libinput guide specifically warns that DMI strings can be too specific. Inspect the actual identity data and choose a pattern that fits the intended devices, then validate the result on the system where it will run.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a fix use both udev rules and hwdb?
Yes. A hardware match can produce properties through hwdb, and a later naming or device-handling step can consume those properties. The systemd network naming documentation gives a concrete example: hwdb allowlist or denylist entries control attributes considered by naming logic, and udev rules can rename devices based on generated properties. See systemd.net-naming-scheme(7).

For a network interface issue, first determine whether the problem is which hardware attributes naming logic considers or whether the interface needs an explicit rule-based rename. The former points toward hwdb configuration; the latter may call for a udev rule. Because the interaction depends on the installed systemd version and distribution configuration, verify the specific naming behavior locally rather than assuming an example applies unchanged.

How do you choose and verify a device fix?
- Define the desired result. If the fix should perform an assignment or action during device handling, start with a udev rule. If it should attach properties based on a hardware identity pattern, consider hwdb. If another component needs those properties to make a later decision, assess both layers.
- Inspect the device identity. Run
udevadm infoto examine available device properties and sysfs information. Identify which attributes are stable enough for the match and whether the needed attribute belongs to the device or a parent. - Check the installed documentation. Confirm file locations, supported match and assignment keys, rule ordering, and hwdb syntax for the systemd release shipped by the target distribution. Upstream manuals and downstream packaging can differ.
- Test the configuration on the target system. If a hwdb-backed libinput property is missing, libinput recommends using
udevadm testto help identify rule or hwdb syntax errors. Available commands and options vary by release, so consultudevadm --helpand the installed man pages before relying on a command as universal.
Why might an hwdb property or rule not take effect?
- The match is wrong or too broad. Compare the configured pattern with the identity data shown for the device; check whether a needed attribute is on a parent.
- The match is too fragile. Firmware or machine-identity details can change. Conversely, a broad vendor/product match may include devices beyond the one intended.
- A rule file is shadowed or ordered differently than expected. Check directory precedence, lexical ordering, and whether a same-named file replaces another file.
- The property is produced but not consumed as expected. Identify which component should read it and whether that component uses the property in the installed systemd and application versions.
- The syntax or workflow differs on this release. Validate against local man pages and use the available
udevadmtest and inspection options supported by the distribution.
