To find out whether speculative decoding makes a coding agent faster, compare the same agent and target model with and without the candidate decoder on representative repository tasks. Measure end-to-end latency and task success as well as tokens per second, draft acceptance, and verification overhead—and repeat the comparison at both low and deployment-relevant concurrency. A speedup on a synthetic prompt set or a code-completion benchmark alone does not establish a benefit for autonomous coding workflows.

What speculative decoding changes—and what it does not

Speculative decoding aims to reduce serial token generation. A faster draft process proposes a short continuation; the target model then verifies or scores it. The method helps when parallel verification costs less than generating the same tokens serially with the target. Rejected draft tokens and verification overhead can erase that advantage.

The foundational speculative-sampling paper describes a rejection-sampling method designed to preserve the target model’s output distribution within hardware numerics. Its authors reported a 2–2.5× decoding speedup for a 70-billion-parameter Chinchilla target in a distributed setup. That is a result for the paper’s setup, not a forecast for a coding agent. Read the speculative-sampling paper.

How to run a fair coding-agent comparison

  1. Choose the outcome before testing. Decide whether the primary goal is lower time to first token, lower time per generated token, shorter end-to-end response time, more completed tasks per unit time, or better quality within a fixed time budget. These measure different benefits; do not substitute one for another after seeing results.
  2. Build a representative task set. Use repository tasks that exercise the actual agent workflow: planning, tool calls, edits, test runs, and multi-turn interaction. Preserve realistic task mix and prompt/context lengths. Use held-out tasks where possible, and prevent future files, edits, or answers from leaking into the agent’s context.
  3. Match the configurations. Keep the target model, agent harness, prompts, decoding parameters, hardware, inference engine, and stopping rules the same in baseline and candidate runs. Record the draft method or model and its draft-length or budget settings. Document warm-up, repetitions, and timing boundaries so the comparison can be reproduced.
  4. Test more than one concurrency level. Include a latency-sensitive, low-concurrency case and a higher-load case relevant to deployment. Plot latency and throughput by concurrency; a single aggregate number can hide a method that helps under one load but hurts under another.
  5. Measure task outcomes and decoding behavior together. For coding tasks, assess success with appropriate hidden tests or repository-level checks. Track end-to-end latency, tokens per second or completed requests/tasks per second, and draft acceptance or accepted span. Also record rejection and verification overhead, rather than treating throughput as the whole result.
  6. Inspect budgets and system costs. Check whether rejected drafts or verification overhead rise as batch size grows, and whether dynamic token budgets go unused. Measure memory, serving cost, and production-engine compatibility in the deployment being considered; these cannot be inferred from results on different hardware or software.
  7. Describe the test conditions. Report hardware, software and engine versions, model family and sizes, concurrency, workload source, prompt and output characteristics, and service region if using a hosted service. Include enough detail for readers to judge whether the result transfers to their environment.

This is a practical protocol synthesized from the cited benchmark work, not a universal published standard.

Why workload and concurrency change the result

Speculative decoding is data-dependent: draft tokens that match the target’s continuation can save serial work, while rejected drafts incur work that does not advance the accepted output. A coding agent also generates different kinds of content across planning, tool use, code edits, and explanations. Results from one prompt type may not reflect the workflow as a whole.

SPEED-Bench separates qualitative evaluation from throughput testing across concurrency levels and reports that synthetic inputs can overestimate real-world throughput. Its authors argue that diverse, representative workloads are needed because performance depends on the data. The benchmark is methodological evidence, not proof that any benchmark fully represents a particular agent. See SPEED-Bench in Proceedings of Machine Learning Research, volume 306, pages 240–267.

AgentSpec identifies high rejection rates and under-use of dynamic token budgets as two factors that can degrade speculative-decoding speedups for LLM agents. Its 2026 preprint reports evaluation in vLLM across five workloads and four models from four LLM families; treat those as the authors’ results, not an independent replication. This is why acceptance and budget behavior help explain a measured outcome, but neither replaces end-to-end latency and task success. Read the AgentSpec preprint or Microsoft Research’s AgentSpec summary.

Keep code-completion results separate from agent-decoding results

Token-level speculative decoding verifies proposed tokens during generation. SpecAgent instead predicts repository context that may be useful for future edits during indexing. It is a code-completion/context-forecasting approach, so its results are not direct evidence that draft-and-verify decoding improves autonomous coding-agent task completion.

SpecAgent appeared in the ACL 2026 proceedings. Its authors report 9–11% absolute gains (48–58% relative) against the best-performing baselines on their code-completion evaluation, alongside significantly reduced inference latency. Those figures belong to that evaluation and should not be transferred to a different intervention or outcome. The paper also identifies future-context leakage as a benchmark-validity concern and constructs a synthetic leakage-free benchmark. Read the SpecAgent paper.

How to interpret published speed figures

Work Reported result What it does—and does not—show
Speculative Sampling (2023) 2–2.5× decoding speedup for a 70-billion-parameter Chinchilla target in a distributed setup Evidence for the paper’s decoding experiment, not a general coding-agent speedup.
BASS (2024) 1.1K tokens per second and 2.15× speedup for a 7.8B model on one A100 GPU at batch size 8; the paper also reports 5.8 ms per token per sequence Batch- and hardware-specific throughput and latency results. The paper reports 43% HumanEval Pass@First and 61% Pass@All within a time budget regular decoding did not finish; those are specific to its evaluation.
SpecAgent (ACL 2026) 9–11% absolute gains (48–58% relative) over the best-performing baselines on its code-completion evaluation, with significantly reduced inference latency A context-forecasting/code-completion result, not a token-level speculative-decoding result for coding agents.

The figures come from different models, methods, workloads, and conditions; they are not an apples-to-apples ranking. BASS is useful evidence that batch settings can materially affect latency, throughput, and code generation under time limits, but its results do not predict another deployment. Read the BASS paper.

What makes a result convincing

A useful conclusion connects mechanism to the outcome that matters: for example, whether lower end-to-end time came with unchanged task success, at which concurrency it occurred, and whether rejection or verification overhead explains the difference. A higher acceptance rate is diagnostic, not itself proof of user-facing benefit. No hardware-independent speedup follows from the cited studies; the relevant answer comes from a matched test on the target workflow and serving setup.
