Quantum ESPRESSO and VASP are both used for first-principles electronic-structure and materials modeling, but they differ most clearly in licensing, package organization, input conventions, and how users obtain and run them. Quantum ESPRESSO is GPL-licensed free software; VASP is proprietary software available under licenses for different kinds of users. Neither is universally faster or better on the evidence available here: choose according to the methods your project needs, your access to a license and datasets, and the software and computing environment your group can support.
How the two codes compare
| Decision area | Quantum ESPRESSO | VASP |
|---|---|---|
| License and access | Free software released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The project guide also asks users to acknowledge recommended publications when reporting work done with the distribution. Quantum ESPRESSO terms of use | Proprietary software licensed for academic, governmental, nonprofit, and commercial use. The available license terms and eligibility depend on the user and institution. VASP license information |
| Package scope | A suite with plane-wave DFT codes and specialized packages, including tools for NEB energy barriers, phonons, post-processing, and conductance. Quantum ESPRESSO documentation | A broad first-principles materials-modeling program with documentation covering theory, setup, calculations, and performance. VASP |
| Basis and datasets | Plane-wave calculations using pseudopotentials, as described in the project documentation. Quantum ESPRESSO documentation | The standard workflow uses POTCAR data for the projector augmented-wave (PAW) method. VASP input documentation |
| Parallel computing | The guide documents MPI and OpenMP, with multiple levels of runtime parallelization; it identifies MPI as the first choice for parallel machines. Understanding Parallelism | Users compile VASP for their hardware and follow its documented calculation setup. This alone does not establish comparative scalability. VASP calculation setup |
Licensing: a practical first filter
Quantum ESPRESSO’s GPL status does not mean that users can ignore the license: consult the license included with the specific version in use for its requirements. The project guide separately requests acknowledgement of recommended publications for scientific work performed with the distribution. Read the Quantum ESPRESSO terms of use.
VASP is not free merely because a research group is academic. Its official FAQ describes license categories for academic, governmental, and nonprofit research institutions as well as commercial users, and directs prospective users to licensing contacts or channels. The reviewed official pages do not provide a complete current price schedule or determine every institution’s eligibility. Confirm the applicable terms directly with the licensor or authorized distributor before planning a project. VASP license information
Compare package capabilities against the calculation you need
Quantum ESPRESSO’s documentation describes a suite, not a promise that every specialized capability is present in every release. Its package inventory includes tools for density-functional theory, Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics, nudged elastic band calculations, phonons, post-processing, and conductance. Check the documentation for the specific package and version relevant to your calculation. Quantum ESPRESSO documentation

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
VASP’s official materials describe a broad first-principles modeling program and organize documentation around theory, setup, calculations, and performance. That high-level scope is not a feature-by-feature comparison with every Quantum ESPRESSO package. For either code, verify that the method you plan to use is documented for the version you can access rather than inferring support from a general product description.
Dataset policy is another part of method fit, not a minor installation detail. Quantum ESPRESSO calculations use pseudopotentials, while the standard VASP workflow uses PAW data supplied through POTCAR. Dataset availability, quality, and licensing may affect a reproducible workflow; the documentation cited here does not establish a comparative ranking of the dataset libraries or their terms.

What the input and output workflows look like
VASP: four standard input files
The VASP manual describes a standard production calculation using four files: INCAR sets calculation parameters, POSCAR defines the structure, KPOINTS specifies Brillouin-zone sampling, and POTCAR provides the pseudopotential or PAW data. The manual calls INCAR the file that holds parameters that “steer” the calculation. VASP input documentation
Outputs can include OUTCAR, OSZICAR, CONTCAR, DOSCAR, CHGCAR, and WAVECAR. Some files can be reused for continuation or later analysis, depending on the calculation. The official short introduction explains the input and output roles; consult it alongside the manual when deciding what to preserve. Input and Output – a short Intro

Quantum ESPRESSO: select the executable and its input reference
Quantum ESPRESSO is organized as a suite of programs rather than one monolithic executable. Users select the program for the task and consult its package-specific documentation and input reference; input details therefore depend on the calculation. The documentation index links to the package materials. Quantum ESPRESSO documentation
The different conventions matter when adapting a lab’s scripts, training new users, or exchanging calculations with collaborators. File naming alone does not show that one workflow is easier or scientifically stronger. In either code, preserve the exact inputs, software version, dataset files, and relevant convergence choices so another researcher can understand how a result was produced.

Build and computing environment
Quantum ESPRESSO documents both MPI and OpenMP execution, and its parallelism guide discusses several levels at which calculations can be distributed. It describes MPI as the first choice for parallel machines. That is guidance on using QE, not a benchmark against VASP. Understanding Parallelism
VASP users compile the source for their hardware and run calculations from a working directory using the documented setup. For both programs, a suitable build and a properly configured computing environment are part of the workflow. A claim that one code runs faster or scales better would require a matched benchmark on the same system, settings, hardware, and software versions; the official material cited here does not establish such a winner.

How to make the choice for a research group
- Start with license access. Determine whether the project can use QE under its GPL terms or has an appropriate VASP license, including confirmation of the institution’s eligibility and intended use.
- Check the exact method and release. Verify that the required calculation is documented in the version available to the group; do not treat a suite inventory or broad product description as proof of parity.
- Check dataset suitability and permissions. Establish which pseudopotentials or PAW data the workflow requires, whether the group can access them, and what terms apply.
- Account for the local workflow. Existing scripts, collaborator practices, installed builds, and available parallel-computing support can affect the practical cost of adopting either code.
- Benchmark only when performance is decisive. Use the same physical system, convergence targets, relevant methods, and hardware, and record versions and settings. Without that comparison, choose on documented fit and access rather than a blanket speed claim.
