There is no single price to upgrade Dataverse for Teams. The cost depends on which Power Platform services your solution uses, how many people need them, what licenses your organization already has, the capacity you need, and which purchasing options are available in your region and channel. Before building, check whether the app can remain in Teams and fit within the environment’s 2 GB relational database limit—or whether you need full Dataverse from the outset.

What changes when you upgrade Dataverse for Teams?

Dataverse for Teams is designed for apps, bots, and automations used in Microsoft Teams. Each environment is associated with one Teams team. Microsoft says that using the environment outside Teams requires an upgrade to full Dataverse. Full Dataverse also offers broader data, security, and lifecycle capabilities, but users need the relevant standalone Power Platform license for each service they use. Microsoft’s licensing FAQ and environment comparison describe these distinctions.

An upgrade is not simply a storage purchase. It changes the environment’s capabilities and licensing requirements. If you already know that the app needs to run outside Teams, use unsupported Dataverse for Teams features, or meet enterprise security or application lifecycle management requirements, evaluate a full Dataverse environment before you build.

How much does it cost to upgrade Dataverse for Teams?

Microsoft does not publish one universal upgrade price. The required license mix depends on the apps, flows, and bots in use; each user’s role and access; premium features and connectors; existing entitlements; capacity needs; and purchasing channel and geography. Microsoft describes licensing routes including standalone product licenses, use rights included with other Microsoft products, capacity add-ons, and eligible pay-as-you-go meters tied to an Azure subscription. See the Power Platform licensing overview for the current framework.

For an estimate, inventory the workload and ask your Microsoft account representative or licensing partner to confirm the applicable licenses and current quote. Do not treat an old per-user or per-app figure as the cost of an upgrade: the license availability and price may not apply to your users, region, or sales channel.

Build a licensing estimate

  1. List the workload: identify every app, flow, and bot, including how each is used and whether it relies on premium connectors or other premium capabilities.
  2. Count the users: determine who will use each service, then note each person’s existing Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform licenses.
  3. Estimate capacity: assess database, file, and log needs against the entitlements included with the licenses under consideration.
  4. Compare billing routes: check standalone licenses, eligible included use rights, add-ons, and pay-as-you-go meters for the specific products and scenario.
  5. Confirm availability and price: verify with Microsoft or a licensing partner for your region and purchasing channel.

Availability is not uniform across sales channels. Microsoft says that, effective January 2, 2026, Power Apps per-app is no longer available to new customers through some channels; availability for existing customers and Cloud Solution Providers varies. Confirm whether it is available for your organization rather than assuming it is an option in your estimate. Microsoft’s licensing overview covers the change.

Can I add storage to Dataverse for Teams?

No. Microsoft says additional capacity cannot be purchased for a Dataverse for Teams environment. Each environment has a 2 GB relational database limit, including files, images, and logs in Microsoft’s comparison. Microsoft associates that limit with up to approximately one million records under typical usage, not a guaranteed row count: record size, schema, and stored files affect how much data fits. See the licensing FAQ and environment comparison.

If you need more capacity, the options described by Microsoft are to upgrade the environment to full Dataverse or start the work in a suitably licensed Dataverse environment. Full Dataverse capacity entitlements depend on the qualifying licenses, and additional capacity can be purchased for full Dataverse.

What happens when a Dataverse for Teams environment reaches 2 GB?

At capacity, users are restricted from creating or installing new apps, bots, or flows in the environment. Tenant-level capacity limits can separately prevent creation of new solutions or environments. Existing solutions can continue to run and grow beyond 2 GB; Microsoft says existing solutions continue to work, with create, read, update, and delete operations allowed, although some options become unavailable. Microsoft’s FAQ explains the behavior.

Administrators can monitor consumption in the Power Platform admin center’s capacity views and analytics. Microsoft’s governance guidance says makers and tenant admins can receive notifications as environment or tenant capacity approaches 80 percent. The notification is an early-warning threshold, not extra capacity or an extension of the limit. Microsoft’s capacity governance guidance was last updated September 3, 2025.

Will Dataverse for Teams support the features I need?

Check feature requirements before choosing an environment. Microsoft’s FAQ says Dataverse for Teams does not include AI Builder tables and does not support desktop flows or custom connectors. Premium connector use has additional licensing requirements. The comparison also identifies data types and controls that are limited or unsupported in Dataverse for Teams, including Currency, Date Only, and Customer. Verify the live feature documentation for each required connector, data type, control, and automation before committing to a design. The licensing FAQ and the comparison outline these differences.

Full Dataverse provides broader capabilities, including richer data types, business logic, reporting, offline support, role-based access controls, auditing, and enterprise application lifecycle management. Those capabilities may justify full Dataverse even if the app’s data volume would fit within the Teams environment limit. Microsoft’s security comparison notes that Dataverse for Teams uses the Teams owners, members, and guests access model, while full Dataverse supports additional controls such as auditing, sharing, field-level security, and hierarchical security. See the environment comparison and Microsoft’s security guidance.

What operational constraints should I check before building?

Team lifecycle and migration

A Dataverse for Teams environment is created from Teams and is linked to its team. Microsoft says the environment is deleted when the associated Team is deleted, so the Team’s lifecycle is also a data and environment lifecycle concern. Include the organization’s retention and recovery policy in the design. Microsoft also says geo migration is not supported for Dataverse for Teams environments. The licensing FAQ describes both constraints.

Microsoft’s FAQ has also stated that packaging or exporting a Dataverse for Teams solution for import elsewhere is not available yet. Because roadmap statements can change, check the current documentation before relying on export or migration as a fallback.

Upgrading environments that contain Copilot Studio bots

If the environment contains Copilot Studio bots, schedule an upgrade window and notify users. While the environment is upgrading, authors cannot create or edit bots, and bot conversations might be affected. Microsoft says a bot continues to work after a successful upgrade without further action. The documentation also says that qualified sessions are treated as billable after upgrade even if they do not use certain premium functionality, such as premium connectors, non-Teams channels, or Azure Framework extensibility. Microsoft’s Copilot Studio upgrade guidance was last updated December 18, 2025.

Microsoft notes that access to the Copilot Studio web app requires a standalone subscription or individual trial license. If bot author collaboration is important, also check the current upgrade guidance: it describes a limitation involving adding bot authors as Teams owners when the Teams Owner security group has been removed.

Which environment should you choose?

Decision Dataverse for Teams Full Dataverse
Where it runs Designed for use in Teams; Office-seeded Dataverse for Teams app use is embedded in Teams. Supports standalone premium apps and use outside Teams with the appropriate license.
Capacity 2 GB relational database per environment, including files, images, and logs; no capacity purchase for this environment type. Base capacity is included with qualifying licenses; additional capacity can be purchased.
Data and maker features Some data types and controls are limited; AI Builder tables, desktop flows, and custom connectors are not supported. Broader data types and enterprise capabilities.
Security and lifecycle Access follows Teams owners, members, and guests; environment lifecycle is linked to the Team. Additional security controls, auditing, and enterprise ALM capabilities.
Licensing Eligible Microsoft 365 use rights support Teams scenarios, subject to subscription and use case; premium connectors have additional requirements. Each user needs the standalone Power Platform license for each service used; exact entitlements depend on product and scenario.

These differences are described in Microsoft’s environment comparison and licensing FAQ. Use them as a workload checklist, not a substitute for verifying the current license terms and feature support for your specific solution.
