You can program a universal remote without the Yamaha original, but the correct code and setup steps depend on both your receiver model and your universal remote model. Find those two model numbers, then use the remote maker’s Yamaha AV-receiver code list or code-search procedure. Yamaha’s own remote instructions cover the reverse task—using a Yamaha remote to control other devices—so they are not a setup recipe for a third-party remote.
What you need before programming
- Yamaha receiver model: Check the receiver’s front or rear label, or your purchase records.
- Universal remote model: Find the manufacturer and model printed on the remote or in its documentation.
- The remote maker’s instructions: Look up the exact remote model’s device-code list or automatic code-search procedure. Choose Yamaha audio receiver or AV receiver if the setup offers device categories.
Yamaha’s U.S. manual library provides manuals and remote-control-code materials for multiple receiver models. Use it to identify your receiver’s documentation, but use the universal remote maker’s instructions to program the third-party remote.
How to program the universal remote
- Look up compatibility. Check whether the universal remote’s manufacturer lists your exact Yamaha receiver model. If it provides multiple Yamaha codes, note the codes and the order or search method the manufacturer recommends.
- Put the remote into setup mode. Follow the key sequence and timing in the instructions for your specific remote. Some remotes accept a code directly; others search for one. The setup method is not universal, so do not substitute instructions for another remote.
- Select the receiver device type. Choose the audio receiver or AV receiver category if prompted, then enter a listed code or run the remote’s code-search process as instructed.
- Test the controls you need. Check power, volume, mute, input selection, and any other functions you rely on. Try each listed code or another search pass if the first code does not work.
Why Yamaha’s remote instructions do not give you the code
Yamaha’s receiver manuals describe configuring a Yamaha remote to control external playback devices. For example, the RX-A3070 manual explains entering a four-digit external-device code using CODE SET and an input-selection key. That procedure registers the code in the Yamaha remote; it does not program a third-party universal remote to control the receiver. The RX-V573 manual likewise describes code entry and search for external devices using its Yamaha remote.
The manuals are still useful for understanding the receiver and its own remote, but they do not establish a universal-remote code for an unspecified receiver and remote combination. Get the code from the third-party remote maker’s compatibility list or search process.

What to do if setup fails or only some buttons work
- No response: Confirm that the remote is set to control an audio or receiver device, check its batteries, and aim it at the receiver with a clear line of sight. Repeat the manufacturer’s setup process with another listed code or search pass.
- Some buttons work, but others do not: A code can provide partial rather than complete control. Test the specific functions you need; registration alone does not guarantee that every receiver function is supported.
- Still no compatible code: Check for an exact-model match in the remote maker’s compatibility list before replacing the remote. A replacement is a better bet when its manufacturer explicitly lists your receiver or you can test it under a favorable return policy.
Choosing a replacement universal remote
Before buying, verify that the remote supports your exact Yamaha receiver and infrared (IR) operation. The RX-V573 manual documents IR transmission for that model, but that does not establish the control method for every Yamaha product. For IR, expect to point the remote toward the receiver without an obstruction. Also check that the code set covers the receiver functions you need and review the return terms in case compatibility is incomplete.
