Open Clipboard history and paste an item
- Copy text or other content as you normally would.
- Press Windows key + V to open the Clipboard history panel. Microsoft documents this shortcut for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- If Windows says Clipboard history is off, select Turn on.
- Select an item in the panel to paste it into the app you are using.
Clipboard history is off by default. You can enable it without opening the panel by going to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and turning on Clipboard history. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference and Using the clipboard.
Pin items you use often
Open Clipboard history with Windows key + V, then use the pin control on the item you want to keep. Pinned items remain available after a PC restart and are not removed when you clear the rest of your clipboard history. This is useful for reusable text or other content you want to retain while allowing older, unpinned entries to expire.
Understand what Clipboard history keeps
- Capacity: Up to 25 copied entries. Older unpinned entries are removed as new items are added.
- Per-item size: Up to 4 MB.
- Supported formats: Text, HTML, and bitmap.
- Restart behavior: Unpinned history is cleared when you restart the PC; pinned items remain.

Delete an item or clear history
- Delete one item: Press Windows key + V, open that item’s more-options menu, and choose the delete control.
- Clear unpinned history: Choose Clear all in the Clipboard history panel, or clear clipboard data in Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. Pinned items are retained.
Sync clipboard items across devices
On each device, open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and enable the cross-device clipboard history setting. Microsoft says the devices must use the same Microsoft account or work account.
You can choose automatic syncing of copied text, or use manual syncing and select the sync control for an individual text item in Clipboard history. The manual option lets you decide which text items to send to your other devices.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s clipboard instructions cover Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The shortcut and steps remain documented for Windows 10; the end of support is a separate consideration when deciding whether to keep using that operating system.
