For a browser multiplayer game with a central, authoritative server, start with WebSockets: the browser sends inputs to the server, which validates them and distributes game state. Choose WebRTC data channels when direct peer-to-peer data exchange is a deliberate part of the design or when you need selectable message ordering and reliability. Neither is automatically faster for gameplay; the right choice depends on topology, message behavior, and how the complete game performs on players’ browsers and networks.

How the two transports connect players

WebSocket creates a bidirectional connection between a browser and a remote server over one TCP connection. That client-to-server model fits a game in which the server owns authoritative state. The protocol’s background discussion describes a single TCP connection for traffic in both directions and identifies gaming as an application area: IETF RFC 6455.

WebRTC data channels carry data between peers through a WebRTC peer connection. The data-channel protocol uses SCTP over DTLS over UDP, and its use cases explicitly include real-time game state as well as critical control information: IETF RFC 8831. A peer connection is part of a broader WebRTC setup; signaling and network traversal must be handled by the overall architecture, rather than assumed to happen automatically.

Choose based on game architecture

Use WebSockets for a server-authoritative game

Choose WebSockets when clients send inputs or commands to a game server and that server determines which state is accepted and shared. This keeps authority in one place and matches the browser-to-server connection model. It is a practical default for games that need a central service to manage state.

Use WebRTC data channels for deliberate peer exchange

Choose data channels when the game benefits from direct exchange between peers, or when its protocol needs delivery behavior that can be configured per channel. RFC 8831 describes unreliable channels for frequently updated position and object state, and reliable transfer for critical control information. Direct exchange is an architectural choice, not a general latency shortcut.

Consider a hybrid only when each connection has a job

A game can use a server connection for functions such as account handling, matchmaking, signaling, or authoritative state while using WebRTC data channels for justified peer-to-peer traffic. This adds connection and operational responsibilities, so use it only when the intended topology makes that complexity worthwhile.

Match delivery behavior to the message

Transport Delivery behavior Good fit Important trade-off
WebSocket Reliable, ordered byte delivery over TCP. Client-to-server inputs and updates where a central server manages game state. Because the stream is ordered, loss recovery can delay later data behind earlier data. The protocol facts alone do not establish the gameplay impact for a particular game.
WebRTC data channel Can be configured for reliable or partially reliable delivery, and ordered or unordered delivery. Peer messages where the application can distinguish replaceable state from critical control. Missing or stale updates are acceptable only when the game protocol can handle them. Reliability and ordering do not remove the need to define message meaning and recovery behavior.

For example, a fresh position snapshot may make an older snapshot obsolete; a critical control message may need reliable, ordered delivery. Use unordered or partially reliable delivery only if the game can tolerate missing or outdated messages. WebRTC data channels are congestion controlled and protected with DTLS, but transport security does not replace the game’s identity, authorization, or abuse controls.

Keep time-sensitive data channels responsive

Large messages can interfere with timely delivery of other data on a WebRTC association when message interleaving is unavailable. RFC 8831 advises limiting a message to 16 KB in that condition to avoid monopolizing the association. This is conditional protocol guidance, not a universal browser maximum.

MDN says modern browsers generally support sending messages of at least 256 kilobytes, while warning that large messages can cause head-of-line blocking across data channels without message interleaving. That is browser guidance, not a guarantee for every browser, version, or network. Check the negotiated max-message-size, keep latency-sensitive messages bounded, and use the data channel’s outbound buffering and buffer-low event mechanism to manage sending: MDN: Using WebRTC data channels.
