Neither one, by itself, proves a position has occurred earlier in a game: repetition detection requires tracking position history. For correctness-critical lookups, treat a hash match as a candidate and verify the underlying position.
What does it mean for two chess positions to be the same?
It depends on the task. A board diagram alone is not enough for many engine and rules purposes: whose turn it is, castling availability, and en-passant state can affect which moves are legal. FEN records these details alongside the piece placement. A program’s Zobrist key should likewise include the features relevant to the identity it is testing.
Other data may matter for a different purpose. FEN includes the halfmove clock and fullmove number, but an application should decide whether those counters belong in its definition of position identity. Move generation and search center on move-relevant state; serialization and draw-rule bookkeeping may require additional counters or history.

What information does FEN contain?
The PGN specification defines FEN as six space-separated fields: piece placement, active color, castling availability, en-passant target square, halfmove clock, and fullmove number. That structure makes a position inspectable and convenient to pass between tools. See the PGN specification.

A FEN is still a snapshot, not a game score. It does not encode the full sequence of earlier positions needed to establish whether repetition has occurred. Also, a parser accepting a FEN does not necessarily establish that the position is reachable through legal play; syntax validity and legal reachability are separate checks. The echecsjs/fen specification summary discusses this distinction.
How Zobrist keys help engines
Zobrist hashing combines bit-string values assigned to position features, commonly using XOR, into a compact key. When a move changes the position, an engine can update the key along with those changes rather than rebuilding a textual representation. This makes the key useful for indexing structures such as transposition tables.

Implementations differ in key conventions and width. For example, the Go chess library documents a ZobristHash() uint64 API for transposition tables and position comparison, and states that positions identical under FIDE rules have the same hash. That is a claim about that library’s implementation, not a universal guarantee about every Zobrist key. See its API documentation. Stockfish’s position implementation shows Zobrist keys used in an engine, including for repetition-related machinery.
Can a Zobrist hash uniquely identify a position?
No finite-width hash is collision-proof: different inputs can produce the same key. A hash match is therefore evidence that two positions may be the same, not mathematical proof. The available sources do not establish a collision rate that can responsibly be applied to all implementations, so do not rely on an unsupported probability estimate.

For an engine table where a rare false match is an accepted engineering trade-off, a hash can serve as a fast index or signature. If a false match would be costly—such as in high-integrity deduplication—retain a canonical position encoding or compare the stored state after a hash hit. String equality on canonical FEN bytes avoids hash collisions, although the application must still define which fields it considers relevant.
Which representation should you use?
Use FEN for people and interchange
- Store or emit FEN when someone needs to read, share, paste, log, or inspect a position.
- Use it in fixtures and debugging because its fields expose the state directly.
- Choose deliberately whether counters belong in your application’s identity comparison; identical board and move-relevant state need not imply identical full FEN text.
Use a Zobrist key for fast lookup
- Use a key in a search engine’s hot lookup path, such as a transposition table.
- Include side to move, castling availability, and applicable en-passant state if they affect the comparisons your engine makes.
- Keep or recover the underlying position data if you need to validate a match rather than accept collision risk.
Use both when you need speed and inspectability
A practical design is to retain a position representation for serialization or verification while indexing records by a Zobrist key. This separates the fast candidate lookup from the authoritative comparison.

What is needed to detect repetition?
Track positions across the game—typically their identities and counts—not just the current FEN or current hash. A single snapshot cannot tell whether the same relevant position appeared earlier. Stockfish’s source illustrates a Zobrist-based approach to repetition detection, but the key remains part of a history-aware mechanism rather than a substitute for history.
