If you want an affordable computer mainly for browsing, email, online documents, and other web-based work, start with a Chromebook laptop. Choose an Android tablet with a keyboard when Android apps and portability matter more than full desktop software. If you need conventional Windows programs, look at a Windows 2-in-1 or laptop. The right choice depends on what you need to run—and the full cost of the device and its accessories.

Compare the three options

Option Best fit What to check
Chromebook laptop Browser-based work, such as web services, email, and online documents Whether your required services work well in a browser; the exact model’s update schedule; and its processor, memory, screen, and storage
Android tablet with keyboard Android apps, touch use, and portability App features, keyboard and case cost, file handling, multitasking, and external-display compatibility
Windows 2-in-1 Desktop software and familiar PC workflows in a convertible form Current local prices and specifications; a Microsoft Surface Pro listing is a premium example, not a budget benchmark

These categories are not interchangeable just because each can be used with a keyboard. A tablet app may lack features available in a desktop program, while a Chromebook is most suitable when the work can be done through web services or supported ChromeOS features.

Chromebook: the starting point for web-first work

A Chromebook has a conventional laptop keyboard and screen, with ChromeOS and a browser-centered workflow. It is a practical first category to consider if your everyday tasks are browsing, email, video calls, and document editing through web services. Before buying, confirm that the web versions of your essential services have the features you rely on.

Check the exact model’s update support

Google’s Chromebook operating-system update guidance says updates are applied automatically during a device’s supported period. Google’s Auto Update policy lists support dates by product, rather than giving every Chromebook one shared end date. Google also describes ChromeOS devices as receiving 10 years of updates; that policy should not be read as 10 years of support remaining from the day you buy any particular device. Check the model’s listed date, especially if you are considering a used Chromebook.

There is an additional trade-off for eligible Chromebooks released before 2021: Google says users who opt into extended updates will lose the ability to run Android apps and use the Play Store. Check the device’s eligibility and understand that consequence before opting in.

Linux tools are available, but not every workflow is covered

Google documents a Linux development environment on supported Chromebooks for command-line tools, code editors, and IDEs. Its support information also notes limitations, including Android emulators and hardware acceleration. Linux support therefore does not guarantee that every desktop development workflow will work on a Chromebook.

Android tablet: best when apps and portability come first

An Android tablet with a keyboard can suit someone whose work is centered on Android apps, browsing, communication, note-taking, media, or lighter document tasks. It is better treated as an app-first compromise than as a laptop equivalent: Samsung’s laptop-versus-tablet guide cautions that some mobile apps have less functionality than full laptop programs.

Check the accessory cost and app behavior

Add the keyboard and, if needed, a case or stand to the tablet’s total cost. Samsung states that its Book Cover Keyboard is sold separately. Before purchasing, check that the specific apps you depend on handle the work you need, including files, keyboard shortcuts, and multiple windows.

DeX is a selected-device feature, not a guarantee for every tablet

Samsung DeX offers a desktop-like interface on selected Galaxy tablets, with features such as multiple windows, drag-and-drop, and right-click actions. Samsung notes that some apps may not run or may require a separate license. For supported DeX display setups, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable and other accessories may also be sold separately. Verify compatibility for the exact tablet and accessories you plan to use.

Windows 2-in-1: choose it when desktop programs matter

A Windows 2-in-1 combines laptop and tablet use in a convertible or detachable form. It is the more relevant option when you need desktop applications or an established Windows PC workflow. Microsoft also documents Snap Layouts for arranging apps side by side.

Price depends on the model and configuration. Microsoft’s page reviewed for this guide displayed a 13-inch Surface Pro at $1,699.99 in 2026; that is a listing for one premium example, not evidence of a typical price or a low-end Windows 2-in-1. Compare current local models and configurations rather than treating that listing as a category-wide price.

Choose by the work you need to do

  • Mostly web services and typing: Start with a Chromebook, then check that the browser versions of your essential services have the functions you need.
  • Mostly Android apps, touch use, and portability: Consider a tablet, adding its keyboard and case to the cost and checking essential apps for the required features.
  • Desktop software or broad PC compatibility: Choose a Windows 2-in-1 or a conventional laptop rather than assuming a tablet app or ChromeOS can replace a desktop program.
  • Buying a used Chromebook: Look up the model’s update date in Google’s Auto Update policy and weigh the Android-app and Play Store trade-off before opting into extended updates on an eligible older device.
  • Using an external screen: Check the exact device’s display-output support and any required accessories. Samsung’s DeX features and connection options depend on device compatibility.

What to check before you buy

  1. List the essential apps and programs. Mark whether each must run as a web app, Android app, or full desktop program.
  2. Check the device’s compatibility. Confirm the needed features—not just whether an app is available—including file handling, multitasking, keyboard support, and external-display use.
  3. Compare the complete setup. Include the keyboard, case or stand, and any required display adapter or cable in the tablet’s total cost.
  4. Review the exact configuration and support. Compare processor, memory, screen, storage, and keyboard, and check the Chromebook model’s listed update date where relevant.
  5. Compare current local offers. Prices and configurations vary by model and region. The sources cited here do not establish a current cheapest model or a fixed entry price.

Platform and feature details here are based on Google Chromebook Help and Chrome Enterprise and Education Help, Samsung’s Australia DeX information and UK laptop-versus-tablet guide, and Microsoft’s Windows 2-in-1 product page. Tom’s Guide’s budget-laptop roundup includes Chromebooks as a value-oriented category, but it does not establish a current market-wide price ranking here. No hands-on comparison or like-for-like study establishes that one category is always cheaper or more productive than another.
