If your iPhone has no service, first try reconnecting it, then check for updates and make sure the correct SIM or eSIM line is enabled. “No Service” or “Searching” means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. “SOS” or “SOS only” means it cannot connect to its own carrier, although emergency calls through other networks may still be possible in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

1. Try a quick reconnect and restart

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn Airplane Mode off.

  2. Restart your iPhone.

These steps can help the phone reconnect when a cellular network is available. They will not fix a carrier outage or an account problem.

2. Check for iOS and carrier settings updates

Apple’s instructions note that menu wording can vary with region and software version, so follow the labels shown on your device.

3. Make sure the correct SIM or eSIM line is active

Open Settings > Cellular and check that the line you intend to use appears and is turned on. On a Dual SIM iPhone, tap the relevant line to inspect its status.

4. Ask your carrier to check the account and network

Your carrier can access account and network details that are not available from the iPhone alone. Ask it to verify the following:

5. If you are traveling internationally

For the line you are using, check that Cellular Data is enabled and Data Roaming is on under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. Roaming availability, plan coverage, and charges depend on your carrier and plan; ask the carrier to confirm those details.

6. Identify who can check likely causes

Possible cause Who can verify or address it Useful next check
Coverage gap or carrier outage Carrier Ask about local coverage and current outages.
Inactive account, incorrect plan, or blocked device Carrier Ask the carrier to verify account standing, plan, and device eligibility.
Disabled or missing cellular line You in Settings; carrier if provisioning is needed Check that the intended line appears and is enabled; contact the carrier if it is absent.
Physical SIM not seated or damaged You can reseat it; carrier handles replacement Remove and reinsert the SIM; ask for a replacement if it is damaged or ill-fitting.
Missing carrier settings or outdated iOS You, using Wi-Fi if needed Check Settings > General > About and install available iOS updates.
Suspected hardware issue after carrier checks Apple or a service provider Arrange service if the carrier rules out account and network causes.

7. When to seek device service

If the carrier confirms there is no account or network issue and suspects a hardware problem, arrange service with Apple or a service provider. The status message alone does not identify a particular failed component.
