Yes—if the exact model appears on Apple’s current iOS 27 compatibility list and the individual phone passes checks for Activation Lock, battery condition, repair history, physical function, seller protection, and price. Software compatibility is only a starting point. If the seller cannot remove Activation Lock or you cannot confirm the iPhone can be set up, do not buy it.
Check whether the exact iPhone model supports iOS 27
Apple’s current iOS 27 compatibility guide lists the iPhone 11 family and newer listed families, including the iPhone 13 family, as compatible. It also lists iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later listed SE models. Use Apple’s page to check the specific model rather than relying on a listing title, a broad family name, or the seller’s claim. Apple notes that features can vary by model, region, language, and carrier.
- Ask the seller for the model shown at Settings > General > About.
- Compare that exact model with Apple’s current compatibility list.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update to check the latest software compatible with that device.
Compatibility does not tell you whether a particular used phone is in good condition, fairly priced, unlocked for your carrier, or free of repair issues. It also does not guarantee how long Apple will support the model in future releases.
Use this checklist before paying
Make sure Activation Lock is off
For an in-person sale, ask the seller to turn off Activation Lock and confirm the iPhone can be set up. Apple’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If an online purchase arrives at the “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen, Apple says to return it; see Apple’s guidance for buying a pre-owned iPhone.

Inspect battery health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health or Battery Health & Charging, depending on the software version. Check maximum capacity and read any messages about degraded health or battery verification. Factor likely replacement costs into your offer; Apple’s battery service options depend on location.
Review Parts and Service History
On a supported device, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple describes labels including Genuine, Unknown, Unverified, and Used. Which components and history appear depends on the iPhone model and its repair history. If the section is absent, that alone does not prove the phone has never been repaired. See Apple’s explanation of iPhone Parts and Service History.

Inspect the phone and test its functions
Look for physical damage and test core functions when you can handle the device. Apple recommends inspecting an online purchase after it arrives; once the iPhone reaches the Home Screen, test its functions. If you cannot inspect it before paying, make sure the seller’s return process gives you a practical way to do so.
Check the seller and return terms
For an online purchase, use a seller you consider reliable, understand the return period and process, and ask what any “certified” designation actually covers. Consider those protections alongside the phone’s condition and price; certification alone does not establish that a specific device has passed the checks above.

Confirm carrier fit and the actual offer
iOS compatibility does not establish that a particular iPhone will work with your intended carrier. Confirm support for the actual device with the seller and carrier. Then compare the asking price with local alternatives and account for any likely repair or battery replacement. The Apple sources cited here do not establish a universal fair price or the value of a specific listing.

| What to assess | What a sound offer should establish | What to do if it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Model eligibility | The exact model is listed in Apple’s current iOS 27 guide. | Do not rely on the family name or seller’s assertion; verify the model in Settings. |
| Condition and service needs | You have checked battery health, physical condition, and any Parts and Service History shown. | Ask for clarification or include likely service needs in your price assessment. |
| Transaction protection | Activation Lock is off, and you understand the return terms and any certification checks. | Do not buy if Activation Lock remains enabled; avoid a transaction whose return terms you cannot understand. |
| Total value | The price still makes sense after accounting for condition and likely repairs, compared with local alternatives. | There is no universal fair price established here; assess the specific offer in your market. |
| Carrier fit | The seller and your intended carrier confirm support for the actual phone. | Do not infer carrier compatibility from iOS 27 eligibility. |
Buy only when the model checks out and the device, seller protections, carrier fit, and total cost work for your needs. An eligible iPhone that remains locked, has unexplained issues, or cannot be returned when a remote inspection fails is not a safe purchase.
