To find out which carrier is most likely to work at your address, compare the location in the FCC National Broadband Map first, then check the same address on each carrier’s official coverage map. Match the network generation, 5G speed tier, and coverage condition before comparing results. Treat every map as a prediction—not a promise of service inside your home—and verify with your own phone where reliable coverage matters.
Compare coverage at your address in six steps
- Open the FCC map and choose Mobile Broadband. Search your street address. If it is not listed, navigate to the location on the map. The default view is for fixed broadband, so make sure you are comparing mobile service. See the FCC’s guide to using the map.
- Check the map’s data date and filters. Note the displayed data-as-of date, then select the mobile network generation and coverage condition you care about. FCC help explains how to search, compare providers, and use the map controls in its National Broadband Map instructions.
- Compare like with like. Compare LTE against LTE, or select the same 5G speed tier for each provider. Also use the same condition—outdoor stationary or in-vehicle—rather than treating the layers as interchangeable. The FCC’s two 5G map thresholds are 35 Mbps download/3 Mbps upload and 7 Mbps download/1 Mbps upload. These are modeled filter thresholds, not guaranteed speeds at every point.
- Check each candidate carrier’s map at the same address. Use the official AT&T coverage map, Verizon coverage map, and T-Mobile coverage map. Enter the full address when possible; a ZIP-code search can conceal differences between neighborhoods.
- Confirm your phone can use the network. Check the exact model, its supported frequency bands, and any required software updates with the carrier. For example, Verizon says access to its full 5G Ultra Wideband network requires support for n77 (C-band), n260, and n261. A map’s 5G indication alone does not establish that your handset supports the relevant network.
- Test the places and conditions that matter. If possible, try the exact phone and service at home and at regular destinations, including indoors if that is where you need service. A temporary trial can help when a provider currently offers one, but check its eligibility and terms; availability is not universal.
What the FCC map can—and cannot—tell you
The FCC National Broadband Map displays provider-submitted availability data and incorporates verification, new provider information, location corrections, and public input. Providers file broadband availability data twice a year. For mobile coverage, the FCC uses propagation modeling with common settings to support comparisons. Its help guidance describes the coverage areas as places where a user should be able to connect outdoors or while moving in a vehicle and reach specified upload and download speeds. The map does not show mobile broadband availability indoors. Read the FCC’s explanation of what is on the map alongside its mobile coverage data information.
Read the selected layer, not just the color
A broad label such as “5G coverage” hides distinctions. The FCC offers two 5G speed tiers—35/3 Mbps and 7/1 Mbps—along with 3G and 4G LTE layers. It also distinguishes outdoor-stationary from in-vehicle coverage. The FCC’s mobile broadband coverage map specifications describe the modeling parameters. A result in one layer should not be read as a result in another.
Understand the limits of a coverage area
A colored coverage area does not guarantee that a connection will work at a particular point. The FCC says real-world experience can vary with the device, cell-site capacity, and terrain. Buildings and their materials can further affect indoor reception. The map is useful for narrowing down candidates, but it cannot certify signal strength in a specific room.

Why carrier maps may show different results
Carrier maps are not necessarily using the same modeling assumptions as the FCC map. FCC guidance notes that providers may use different parameters, and that treatment of roaming agreements can affect what an availability map shows. A mismatch is therefore a reason to examine definitions and test service—not, by itself, proof that one map is wrong.
| Map | What its map says it shows | Useful details and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| FCC National Broadband Map | Modeled mobile availability outdoors or in a vehicle at specified speeds; no indoor mobile availability layer. | Offers technology, 5G speed-tier, and environment filters. Check the selected layer and data date. |
| AT&T | Approximate outdoor coverage. | Accepts an address, city/state, or ZIP. AT&T says actual coverage may vary, is not guaranteed, and can change without notice. |
| Verizon | Approximate outdoor coverage. | Separates 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G, and LTE. Verizon says service is not guaranteed and can vary with equipment, weather, topography, environmental factors, and building conditions. |
| T-Mobile | Anticipated outdoor coverage. | Accepts an address or ZIP. T-Mobile says network changes, traffic, outages, equipment, obstructions, weather, and other conditions can affect service. Its map also marks some areas served by local wireless partners, where signal strength varies. |
What can make the map differ from your experience?
- Indoor location: The FCC mobile map does not represent indoor availability. Walls, building materials, and where you are inside can change reception.
- Network load and terrain: A modeled area does not establish the capacity available at a busy time or the effect of local terrain.
- Phone compatibility: The handset needs the relevant network support and bands; software can also affect access.
- Roaming or partner service: Some displayed availability may involve roaming or a local wireless partner. Check the map legend and the relevant plan terms rather than assuming all coverage is native service.
- Changing conditions: Carrier maps and networks can change, and outages or weather may affect service. Recheck the map if a decision is time-sensitive.
Why national coverage percentages do not pick a local winner
Verizon reports LTE coverage to more than 99% of the U.S. population. T-Mobile reports LTE coverage for 99% of Americans and 5G coverage for 98%. These are carrier-published nationwide population claims, not a standardized head-to-head measurement of service at your address. They cannot tell you which carrier works in your home or at the places you travel.

The FCC provides a process for challenging mobile coverage when the map indicates service you do not receive. Its guidance directs users to the FCC Mobile Speed Test App and designated outdoor or in-vehicle challenge tests. Follow the current instructions in the FCC’s consumer guide; the relevant test condition matters because the challenge is tied to the mapped condition.
