Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For fine details in an FDM optical-illusion print, match the setting to the direction of the feature: reduce layer height for detail along the vertical axis, and consider nozzle diameter and thin-wall handling for narrow lines or walls in the print’s plane. Cooling and speed need to suit the filament and geometry. There is no single best profile without knowing the printer, slicer, material, and model.
Start by identifying where the detail lies
Optical patterns can combine raised steps, shallow curves, narrow ridges, and thin walls. A setting that helps one kind of feature may do little for another. Prusa Research distinguishes vertical resolution, which layer height affects, from detail in the XY plane, for which nozzle diameter is relevant. Its guidance is for FDM printing; it does not establish an optimal profile for a particular illusion model or for resin printing.
| Detail to preserve | Settings or checks to consider | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Sloping or stepped surfaces that rise along Z | Layer height | Smaller layers can reveal more vertical detail, but increase print time. |
| Narrow ridges, channels, or walls in the XY plane | Nozzle diameter, extrusion width, and thin-wall/perimeter handling | These affect whether narrow in-plane features can be represented or generated. |
| Bridges, overhangs, or small layers | Filament-specific cooling and short-layer behavior | Cooling can help extrusions hold shape, but excessive cooling can cause material-specific problems or slow the print. |
| Overall motion and extrusion rate | Feature speeds, maximum volumetric speed, and slicer slowdowns | The speed entered in one field may not be the speed used for every feature. |
Choose a layer height for vertical detail
Layer height is the main control for print time and vertical resolution, according to Prusa Research’s layers and perimeters guidance. As an initial comparison, try the printer’s normal profile against a compatible profile around 0.10–0.15 mm, if those values suit the machine and nozzle. Treat that range as a starting experiment, not a guaranteed optimum for optical illusions.
Prusa gives 0.10 mm as an example of a layer height that adds detail while taking longer. It generally does not recommend going below 0.10 mm: its guidance says the improvement at 0.07 or 0.05 mm is relatively minor compared with the extra print time. These are manufacturer recommendations, not measured results for an illusion print.

- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Do not mistake the maximum layer-height guideline for a fine-detail target. Prusa says layer height should be below 80% of nozzle diameter; for a 0.4 mm nozzle, that is about 0.32 mm. A much smaller value may be appropriate when seeking more Z detail. If you change the first-layer height, use the appropriate profile and check first-layer calibration.
Use nozzle and perimeter settings for narrow XY features
A smaller compatible nozzle may help when the illusion depends on narrow ridges, channels, or walls in the plane of the bed. Prusa identifies nozzle diameter—not layer height—as relevant to XY resolution. A finer nozzle is not automatically better: the printer must accept it, and the slicer profile and extrusion widths must match the nozzle. No feature width or printer model is specified here, so a particular nozzle size cannot be promised to resolve the pattern.

Check for missing lines in the slicer preview
Before printing, inspect the sliced preview where the pattern has its thinnest features. If lines or walls disappear, review the slicer’s perimeter and thin-wall behavior. In PrusaSlicer, “Detect thin walls” can generate a single perimeter that serves as both the inside and outside shell. Prusa also documents Arachne as a perimeter generator that automatically adjusts extrusion width for thin walls; it is the default in the context of that guidance. Other slicers may use different names or behave differently.
There is a limit: a wall thinner than one extrusion width may still be omitted. If a feature remains absent in preview, changing layer height will not bring it back; the geometry, nozzle, or extrusion-width strategy may need to change.

Tune cooling for bridges, overhangs, and short layers
Cooling can help freshly extruded plastic solidify before later nozzle movement distorts it, which is useful for bridges and overhangs. But maximum fan is not a universal detail setting. Prusa warns that stronger cooling can cause warping or layer separation with some materials.
Follow the filament’s profile and inspect how the slicer handles short layers. Prusa’s documented controls include fan ranges, bridge and overhang fan speed, and slowing down when a layer’s print time is short. That slowdown can help give small features time to cool, but it also lengthens the print. Keep cooling and short-layer behavior tied to the material and geometry rather than applying one fan value to every filament.

Set speed with flow limits in mind
A speed value in the slicer is only one input. Actual movement can also be limited by feature-specific speed, maximum volumetric speed, overhang or cooling rules, and minimum layer-time behavior. Maximum volumetric speed depends on both the hotend and the filament, as explained in Prusa Research’s maximum volumetric speed guidance.
Start conservatively with the machine and material profile rather than applying a universal mm/s recommendation. Increase flow limits gradually only when appropriate. Under-extrusion or poor layer adhesion are warning signs that the selected maximum may be too high.

A practical way to refine the profile
- Inspect the geometry in the slicer. Identify whether the fragile details are vertical surfaces, XY lines, thin walls, bridges, or overhangs.
- Check the preview for omitted features. If a narrow line vanishes, investigate nozzle and perimeter handling before lowering layer height.
- Compare compatible layer-height profiles. Try a modestly lower value, such as around 0.10–0.15 mm when suitable for the printer and nozzle, and compare the resulting detail and print time.
- Use the filament’s cooling profile. Review bridge/overhang fan behavior and short-layer slowdowns; do not assume more cooling is always beneficial.
- Keep speed within flow limits. Respect the hotend and filament’s maximum volumetric speed, and watch for under-extrusion or weak layer adhesion.
Change one relevant group of settings at a time and compare the same region of the sliced preview or print. Because the model, orientation, machine, and material determine which limitation matters, this process is more reliable than copying a purported universal optical-illusion profile.
