Identify the support material first, then remove it in small, controlled cuts. For delicate details, avoid pulling, twisting, or levering the support mass: work from accessible outer supports inward, stabilize the print, and switch to a sharp hand tool when cutters cannot reach a contact cleanly.
Identify the print process and support material
The right removal method depends on what the supports are made of, where they touch the model, and how delicate the part is. A method intended for one support family is not automatically safe for another. Check the printer, filament or resin, and support-material instructions before applying water, solvents, heat, or chemicals.

Remove supports with controlled cuts
- Stabilize the print. Hold or support the model so it does not flex while you work. Choose a position that gives you a clear view of each contact and keeps your fingers out of the cutter path.
- Put on eye protection. Small pieces of support can fly when clipped. Keep sharp blades directed away from the hand supporting the print.
- Start at the outside edge. Use flush cutters on an accessible support and work inward as each cut opens access to the next contact. Cutting near the model helps limit leftover nubs, but keep the jaws on the support rather than biting into the part.
- Separate contacts one at a time. Make small cuts instead of twisting or pulling a whole support structure against thin walls, spikes, or other fine features.
- Switch tools if cutters cannot reach safely. If the cutter jaws would press on a delicate feature, use a hobby knife or scalpel to separate the contact with a careful, controlled motion. Formlabs recommends sharp hand tools for geometries where flush cutters do not fit.
- Clean up only what remains. Use gentle finishing rather than increasing force. Small files or tweezers can help with detailed support marks; the appropriate finish depends on the part’s intended appearance and use.
Choose the tool for the contact point

Use the access and fragility of the contact to choose between cutters and a blade. Avoid levering a support off by using the model itself as a fulcrum; that can load the very feature you are trying to preserve.
Know when to stop and reassess
Stop if the part begins to flex or whiten, or if a support will not release cleanly. These are conservative warning signs, not manufacturer-defined thresholds. Reposition the print, improve access to the contact, and recheck the material-specific removal guidance rather than applying more force.

Take extra care with soluble supports
Some manufacturer instructions specify water pressure or a chemical solution for particular soluble support materials. Stratasys’s J850/J835 guidance is product- and material-specific; do not treat its procedures as interchangeable with consumer printer materials.
Stratasys warns that caustic soda can cause severe chemical burns, scarring, and blindness, and that mixing it with water generates heat. If—and only if—the exact support-material instructions call for caustic soda, follow those instructions and their safety precautions precisely. The Stratasys guidance says to add caustic soda to water, never pour water into caustic soda. Do not improvise a chemical bath.

Make the next print easier to clean
When the model and print requirements allow it, orient the part so supports touch less visible or less important surfaces. Consider where support contacts will land as well as whether the model remains adequately supported: a contact that is easy to remove may still leave a mark, while a hidden contact may be hard to access. Formlabs discusses support placement and removal considerations in its support-removal guide.
Exact support settings, spacing, and any heat or soak conditions depend on the printer and material. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish universal settings for every detailed print.
