Purchased games remain tied to the account that bought them and can be reinstalled after you sign back in. Saved progress is different: it returns only if a usable backup exists for that game.
Before erasing the headset, check Cloud Backup for recent backups of the games whose progress matters. Meta does not guarantee that every app backs up its saves, so do not reset until you have checked the relevant game or developer guidance if its progress is not visible.
What a factory reset removes—and what it does not
Meta describes a factory reset as irreversible. It clears account information, downloaded games and other content stored on the headset. It does not remove content purchased through your Meta account. After the reset, sign in to the account that owns the games and reinstall them; they will not remain installed on the cleared headset. Game purchases and saved progress are separate. A purchase can remain available to reinstall even when a game’s local save is gone. Restoring progress depends on whether the game participates in Cloud Backup, includes its save data in the backup, and has a usable backup available.

Check game saves before resetting
Inspect Cloud Backup
- Connect the headset to Wi-Fi and power.
- Open Settings > System > Backup (the labels may vary by software version).
- Confirm Cloud Backup is enabled, then check whether each important game has a recent backup.
- When available, request a manual backup from the Cloud Backup panel before erasing. Automatic backups run at system-defined times and conditions, so being online does not prove that the latest progress has already been saved.
Meta’s Cloud Backup documentation says the feature requires Horizon OS v35 or later. It describes backups for participating apps, not a guaranteed copy of every app’s files. Developers can opt out, exclude save data, or store it outside supported locations; backups also have a size limit. Meta’s Save Game Best Practices sets the per-backup ceiling at 100 MiB.
If a game has no recent backup
Do not assume its progress is protected. Check the game’s support guidance before resetting; Meta’s platform documentation cannot establish whether an individual title currently backs up its save or whether your particular backup is usable.

Cloud Backup is not continuous save synchronization. Backup history is associated with an app, device and person. When an app is installed, the system looks for a backup for that device and can restore a recent backup from another owned device if no device-specific backup is found. Meta explains this behavior in its platform services documentation. You can inspect available backups in the headset panel or on Meta’s Cloud Backups page.
Do not confuse current Cloud Backup with Cloud Storage V2. Meta shut down Cloud Storage V2 on January 31, 2025; users who did not migrate affected saves before shutdown lost access to that legacy data. Meta’s deprecation FAQ also notes that some apps opted out and some Rift/Go use cases could leave saves local only.

Choose the reset method that fits your access
Meta calls a factory reset a last resort for device issues. It recommends trying a software update and a hard reboot first; for the reboot, hold the power button for 30 seconds. If you do reset, Meta recommends at least 50% battery. The methods differ by whether you can use the headset, whether it is paired to the app, and whether its software supports remote reset.

Reset with the headset buttons
- Turn off the headset.
- Hold Power and Volume Down together until the boot screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset, then press Power.
- Highlight Yes and press Power to confirm.
Reset from the paired app
In the Meta Horizon app, go to Menu > Devices > select your headset > Headset settings > Advanced settings > Factory reset > Reset. The headset must be paired. App labels can change as Meta updates the interface.

Reset a lost or stolen headset remotely
In Meta Account device settings, select the headset and choose Delete device data or Factory reset, then complete identity verification. The reset occurs the next time the headset comes online. Meta notes that this option may not appear on software versions that do not support remote reset.

Restore games and eligible saves after the reset
- Complete headset setup and sign in to the Meta account that owns the purchases.
- Reinstall the games you want from that account.
- Allow an eligible Cloud Backup to restore when the game is installed.
- If progress is missing, check the Cloud Backups page for available backup versions. Meta says deleting a cloud backup is permanent, so do not remove one unless you intend to discard it.
