To stop Gemini from opening when you use your phone’s assistant shortcut, change Android’s default digital assistant in Settings. To keep Gemini installed but stop a specific trigger, turn off that trigger instead. Deleting the Gemini app is a separate action and does not automatically change the default assistant.
Choose what you want to change

Change Android’s default digital assistant
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app.
- Choose another available assistant, or select None if your device offers it.
Google notes that the steps vary by device. If the path does not match your phone, search Settings for digital assistant app. The selected default controls which app Android uses for assistant actions; it does not necessarily change separate button or gesture assignments.
Switch from Gemini to Google Assistant
Google’s Gemini help page documents this in-app option:
- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Switch to Google Assistant, then Google Assistant.
- Confirm by tapping Switch.
This option may not be available to everyone. Google announced on March 14, 2025, that it was transitioning more mobile users from Assistant to Gemini and that classic Assistant would no longer be accessible on most mobile devices later in 2025. Google’s announcement also said that functionality would not change at that time on devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum system requirements. Because Google’s help page still lists the switch-back procedure, availability depends on the device and its current software or account state; neither universal availability nor universal removal should be assumed.

Turn off a Gemini activation trigger
These controls are separate: turning one off does not necessarily affect the others. Google documents controls for voice activation and lock-screen use, while power-button and gesture settings vary by manufacturer.
Turn off “Hey Google”
In the Gemini app, open Menu > profile picture or initial > Settings, then turn off Hey Google if the setting is available. Google’s help page documents this control; the exact route or label may differ across versions.

Stop Gemini from working without unlocking
In the Gemini app, open Menu > profile picture or initial > Settings and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking if shown. This changes lock-screen access, not the default assistant.
Change the power-button or gesture action
Look in Settings for power, gesture, or your manufacturer’s button controls. The path and available actions depend on the phone. On some devices, the shortcut can be reassigned separately from the default digital assistant.

Samsung Galaxy: set the assistant and side button separately
Samsung documents this path for changing the default digital assistant:
- Open Settings > Apps > Choose default apps.
- Tap Digital assistant app > Digital assistant app.
- Choose Google or another available option.
To change what a long press of the side button does, go to Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Long Press. Samsung treats the side-button assignment separately from the digital-assistant default. Menu availability varies by Galaxy model and software version.

Delete Gemini only if you want to remove the app
Deleting Gemini is not the same as changing the phone’s assistant default. Google states: “Deleting the Gemini mobile app doesn’t automatically remove Gemini as your device’s default digital assistant.” If your goal is to stop Gemini opening for assistant actions, change the default separately in Settings. Whether Android lets you delete the app can vary by device.

If a menu or option is missing
- Search Settings for digital assistant app to find the default-assistant control.
- Search for power, side button, or gesture to locate shortcut controls.
- Check your phone maker’s support instructions if the labels differ. Google and Samsung both caution that menus or available options vary by device, model, and software version.
- If you cannot find the switch-back option in Gemini, use the default-assistant setting if another assistant or None is available on your phone.
