No. A blue checkmark does not prove who currently controls an account or whether a post was authorized by its owner. If an X account may be hacked, treat its posts and requests as untrusted until the owner confirms them through a separate channel you already trust. Verify important claims independently before sharing or acting on them.
What an X checkmark does—and does not—tell you
X says a blue checkmark means an account has an active X Premium subscription and meets the platform’s eligibility requirements. It does not mean the account has been ID verified, and X does not endorse the views expressed by accounts displaying the badge. X’s explanation of the blue checkmark describes a platform subscription and eligibility status, not proof of who is using the account right now.
The badge’s meaning has changed. X began winding down legacy verification on April 1, 2023. Under the former criteria, a blue checkmark indicated an account of public interest that was authentic, notable, and active. Those old criteria should not be used to interpret a current blue checkmark. X’s legacy verification information explains the former program.
X also uses gold checkmarks for official organization accounts through Premium Business and grey checkmarks for government, multilateral organizations, or officials. These labels provide category context; none establishes that a particular post was authorized by the account owner. X’s guide to verified organizations describes these indicators.

How to assess a post from an account that may be hacked
- Confirm the message through a separate channel. Contact the purported owner using a phone number, email address, or account you already trusted before the suspicious post appeared. Do not rely on contact details supplied in that post or a new message from the account.
- Check consequential claims independently. Look for confirmation from reliable sources before sharing news, financial claims, or safety instructions.
- Be especially cautious with urgent requests. Treat requests for money, passwords, login codes, or immediate action as suspect while account control is uncertain.
- Do not treat the checkmark as corroboration. It says nothing about whether the account owner wrote, approved, or even saw the message.
These steps apply whether the account has a blue, gold, or grey checkmark. A badge can remain visible while someone else has access.
Signs an X account may be compromised
X lists several possible indicators in its compromised-account guidance:
Rank #2
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Unexpected posts or direct messages sent from the account.
- Following or blocking activity the account owner did not approve.
- Notifications that the account’s email address or other details changed unexpectedly.
- A password that no longer works.
These signs warrant prompt attention, but they do not by themselves prove who accessed the account. X notes that a third-party application bug can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.
What to do if your X account may be hacked
If you can still sign in
- Change the X password immediately. Use a strong password that you do not use on any other service.
- Secure the email account linked to X, including its password and sign-in protections. Someone with access to that inbox may be able to interfere with account recovery.
- Review connected third-party applications and revoke access for any you do not recognize or no longer use. If trusted third-party apps use your X password, update that password in those apps as well.
- After securing access, remove posts you did not authorize and review recent account activity.
- Enable two-factor authentication. X’s two-factor authentication guidance describes available protections; its security guidance also mentions security keys. Confirm compatibility with your devices and current account settings before choosing a method.
If you cannot sign in
Try X’s password-reset process first. If you still cannot regain access, X says to submit a support request using the email address associated with the account and include the username and the date you last had access. Follow the current instructions on X’s compromised-account page.

How accounts get compromised—and how to reduce the risk
X identifies several possible routes: sharing credentials with malicious third-party apps or websites, using weak or reused passwords, malware that collects passwords, and compromised networks. Its account security advice recommends using a strong, unique password, enabling two-factor authentication, being cautious with suspicious links, and keeping software current. Security keys are one safeguard X mentions; X does not endorse a specific brand or model.
