On a Pixel, you can start it by saying “Hey Google,” holding the power button, tapping Gemini in the Google app, or opening the Gemini app. Some familiar Google Assistant features are still missing, and availability depends on your language, location, account, and settings.
Which Pixel phones support Gemini?
Google says the Gemini app is available to download on Pixel devices with at least 2 GB of RAM and Android 10 or later. That is the published app baseline; it does not mean every Gemini feature works on every eligible phone.
Google identifies Pixel 9 and later phones as having Gemini set as the default assistant. This default-assistant distinction does not limit app downloads to those models: an older Pixel that meets the stated Android and memory requirements can still download Gemini. Feature availability can vary by country, language, account type, and settings. Some features are unavailable for supervised accounts or certain work and school accounts. Hey Google and Voice Match have additional language and account restrictions.

How do you activate Gemini on a Pixel?
Google documents four ways to open Gemini on Pixel phones:
- Say “Hey Google” if Hey Google and Voice Match are enabled and supported for your account and language.
- Hold the power button. You can change the button action in Gemini Settings.
- Tap Gemini in the Google app.
- Open the Gemini app directly.
Turn on Hey Google and Voice Match
If voice activation does not work, check that both Hey Google and Voice Match are turned on. Google’s current Android guidance directs users to the Gemini app’s profile and settings or to Voice Match settings in their Google Account; the exact route may differ with the app interface. Hey Google activation does not mean Gemini alone listens for and handles every part of the interaction. Google explains: “When you use ‘Hey Google’ and Voice Match for your Gemini mobile app, Google Assistant detects the activation, recognizes you with Voice Match, routes your query to Gemini, and helps Gemini to fulfill your request if it is a quick voice action feature that Gemini is still learning to handle directly.”
What happens during voice activation?
Google says Assistant waits for the activation phrase while in standby and does not send what you say to Google or anyone else during that standby period. After detecting an activation, it may send detected audio and the Voice Match model temporarily for comparison. A sound resembling “Hey Google” can trigger detection, and a similar voice or recording could be mistaken for the enrolled user. Whether an unintended interaction is saved in Gemini Apps Activity depends on your Keep Activity setting.

Hey Google and Voice Match with Gemini are unavailable for supervised accounts and in Bulgarian, Croatian, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, and Ukrainian, according to Google’s current eligibility guidance.
Can you use Gemini while your Pixel is locked?
Gemini can handle some requests from a locked Android phone when the relevant lock-screen access is allowed. Google lists general questions, calls or messages with user opt-in, reading and replying to message notifications, Maps directions and place information, some reminders and notes, video search and summaries, hotel and flight searches, many smart-home controls, alarms and timers, media pause, and selected phone controls such as flashlight and volume.

Lock-screen access does not remove protections around personal information. Some requests—such as accessing calendar information—still require you to unlock the phone. Whether Gemini can begin a voice chat, answer a particular request, or carry out a protected action depends on the relevant access and personal-data settings. Gemini’s strengths
Google describes Gemini as a tool for writing, brainstorming, learning, and other tasks. It can work with text, voice, images, and camera input, and connect with extensions such as Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. Google cautions that responses may be inaccurate or inappropriate, so check important information; Gemini is not a substitute for professional advice. Assistant features that may be missing
Gemini does not support every established Google Assistant function. Google specifically names Interpreter mode and media service providers for podcasts, news, radio stations, and some third-party music providers as unsupported in Gemini. If a feature you depend on is unavailable, Google says you can switch back to Google Assistant. Its Gemini and Google Assistant feature guidance describes these limitations.
It is more accurate to think of Gemini as Google’s newer conversational assistant experience than as a complete replacement for Assistant in every setting. Assistant can still take part in voice activation and some quick actions, and devices such as smart displays, speakers, TVs, cars, watches, headphones, and earbuds that have Assistant built in continue to use Assistant even after you switch the assistant on your phone.
Can you use Gemini with Pixel Buds?
Pixel Buds are optional: they are not required to activate Gemini on a Pixel phone. Google documents selecting Gemini as the digital assistant on an Android device and using it through Pixel Buds with “Hey Google.” Its Pixel Buds help also covers Gemini and Gemini Live use and a lock-screen setting.
