Copy important files to another drive or backup location before running a health check, as long as the external drive is still readable. Then use a diagnostic that supports the drive, interpret any warnings cautiously, and act on failures promptly. A pass can help identify current problems, but it cannot guarantee the drive will not fail later.
1. Protect your files before testing
Back up irreplaceable files to a different device or location before running diagnostics. Seagate advises backing up before testing and, after a SMART error, backing up as soon as possible. If the drive is becoming unreliable, prioritize copying the most valuable files first.
Do not start by formatting the drive, opening its enclosure, or running repair operations that could alter data. A health check and a file-system repair are different tasks; secure the files before considering repairs.
2. Identify the drive and choose a supported check
Note the drive’s make and model, and whether it contains a spinning HDD or an SSD if that information is available. An external drive connects through a USB enclosure or bridge, and that interface may affect which health information the computer can read.

Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic when available
Prefer a diagnostic utility supported by the drive’s manufacturer. Seagate’s SeaTools guide describes viewing drive information, health, and SMART attributes. Support for features on non-Seagate drives varies, so a feature that is unavailable for another brand does not establish that the drive is faulty or healthy. See the SeaTools User Guide.
Check the utility’s instructions to distinguish a status report from a self-test. The available sources do not establish a universal test duration or a consistent feature set across manufacturers, so follow the instructions for your specific tool and drive.

On a Mac, check supported disks in Disk Utility
Apple’s Disk Utility can check many disks and show disk information and health for supported devices. If it reports a fatal hardware error, software utilities cannot repair the underlying hardware problem; back up whatever remains readable and consider service or replacement. See Apple’s guidance on checking whether a Mac disk is about to fail.

Microsoft’s cited Storage critical-warning feature monitors NVM SSDs; it does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs. That limitation applies to this warning feature, not to every Windows disk utility. In particular, not seeing a warning there is not evidence that an external HDD is healthy. See Microsoft’s explanation of critical warnings for storage devices.

3. Understand what the result means
| Result | What it tells you | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| SMART error or failed diagnostic | The tool has reported a problem; it is not a promise that repair software can fix the hardware. | Back up readable data promptly, check support or warranty options, and plan for replacement if the manufacturer’s diagnostic indicates it is needed. Seagate says a diagnostic error means the drive needs replacement and that the underlying problem behind a SMART error cannot be repaired. |
| Warning or concerning SMART attributes | There may be a risk signal, but a raw attribute value is not universally interpretable across brands and models. | Preserve important files and consult the drive maker’s documentation or support for that model. |
| Pass or no reported problem | The check did not identify a problem under that test; it does not predict remaining life or guarantee future reliability. | Keep a separate backup and continue to watch for new warnings or symptoms. |
| SMART unavailable or test could not run | The connection, permissions, tool execution, or drive support may prevent the check. This is not a positive or negative health finding by itself. | Verify the utility supports the drive, check permissions, and try a supported connection or port before drawing a conclusion. |
SMART is a warning layer, not a universal countdown to failure. Manufacturers define attributes and thresholds, and raw values can have manufacturer-specific meanings. Do not treat one number as a diagnosis across all drives. Western Digital explains this variation in its guidance on OEM SMART attributes.
4. If SMART data is unavailable
Some USB interfaces do not pass SMART commands through to the computer. Seagate’s maintained openSeaChest guide also identifies permissions and tool execution as possible limitations. Confirm the tool supports your drive, verify that it has the required permissions, and try a connection the manufacturer supports if one is available. Until the check can run, treat the result as unknown—not as proof of a healthy or failed drive. See How To Check Drive Health.

5. Escalate errors without risking the backup
When a SMART error or failed manufacturer test appears, stop treating the drive as a dependable copy of your files. Seagate Support recommends backing up as soon as possible after a SMART error; it also says there is no method to repair the underlying problem behind that error, and that a diagnostic error means replacement is needed. Its guidance is available under “My system reported a S.M.A.R.T. error on the drive”.

If the drive is not readable, avoid repeated repair or formatting attempts when the files matter; consult the manufacturer or a qualified data-recovery provider. A replacement drive is relevant once testing indicates failure or when you need a separate destination for backups—not as a substitute for preserving data now.
