Before updating Baldur’s Gate 3, make a separate copy of any campaign you cannot afford to lose and verify that the copy exists. Your normal saves are stored locally on your device; Larian Account Cross-Save is a temporary synced copy, not a permanent archive. Then install the update through the platform you play on, since version numbers can differ by platform.
Back up your saves before updating
Larian’s documented Windows precaution is to copy the whole folder for the relevant player profile to another location. For a valuable campaign, keep that copy somewhere separate from the game’s normal save location, such as storage you already own. After copying, check that the backup folder and its contents are present. This is a precaution, not a guarantee against every possible loss.
- Find the profile folder. On Windows, open File Explorer and enter
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfilesin the address bar. - Copy the relevant profile folder. Paste it to a separate backup location. Larian’s advice to copy the whole profile folder comes from its Patch 9 guidance, so storefront and current game behavior may differ.
- Verify the copy. Confirm that the copied folder is present and contains files before updating. Do not treat a Larian Account sync as your only backup.
For reference, Larian lists the Windows Public profile’s Story saves at %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfilesPublicSavegamesStory. Individual save files use the .lsv extension. This location can help when locating a specific save, but copying the relevant profile folder is Larian’s documented approach for a broader backup.
On console, saves are stored locally on the console. The Windows folder paths above do not apply; use the console’s own save-management options if you need a separate backup.

Understand what Larian Cross-Save does
Larian says saves are stored locally on the PC or console, while Larian Account sync stores a copy of your last 10 saves on its servers for up to 6 months. That retention limit applies to the synced copies; it does not affect saves stored on your device. Larian advises keeping especially important saves locally or somewhere besides the account service. Cross-Save can help move recent saves between linked platforms, but its ten-save limit and six-month retention make it unsuitable as a permanent archive. A separate manual copy gives you another option if a later update, mod issue, or version change makes a campaign difficult to access.

Install the update for your platform
Use the update offered by your own platform’s client or console. Do not rely on one version number as a universal indicator: Larian’s August 3, 2026, Xbox Play Anywhere announcement listed PC and PS5 at 4.1.1.7398727, Steam Deck at 4.1.1.7451994, and Xbox at 4.1.1.7445165. The different numbers illustrate why platform-specific update status matters. Check Larian’s announcement for that dated release context.
Larian’s news index also lists Hotfix #36, dated March 26, 2026, as version 4.1.1.7209685. Among its fixes was a frame-rate drop and eventual crash when loading a save. That announcement shows that updates can address save-loading problems; it does not establish that Hotfix #36 remains the newest build. See Larian’s news index.

Older directions about disabling automatic updates or selecting a beta branch were written for Patch 9 in 2022. Storefront controls and labels can change, so do not assume those historical steps match the current client. If you need to preserve access to a campaign on an older version, check the current options in your platform client before changing branches or versions.
Keep a new playthrough separate from an older one
If you want to start a new campaign on a newer patch while keeping older-patch progress separate, Larian’s Patch 9 guidance recommends creating a new in-game profile before beginning that playthrough. The profile separates the new playthrough’s progress from the previous profile; making a separate folder copy adds another recovery option. This advice is documented in Larian’s Patch 9 announcement, so treat it as historical guidance rather than a promise about every current platform or build.

If you use mods, check compatibility after updating
Updates can cause problems with mods. Larian recommends keeping supported mods current through the in-game Mod Manager. For multiplayer, everyone needs the same mods on the same versions; otherwise, the party’s mod setup does not match.
If a major update causes launch or in-game problems with third-party mods, Larian’s troubleshooting guidance suggests removing existing mod files as a troubleshooting step—not as a required pre-update ritual for every player. It identifies the installation’s DataMods and DataPublic folders, and says modsettings.lsx in the profile folder may also be removed when applicable and when you are not using a new profile for the current patch. Back up relevant files before changing them, and consult Larian’s mod troubleshooting FAQ for context.

If a save is missing or will not load
- Check the local save location. On Windows, inspect the relevant profile under
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfiles; the Public profile’s Story saves are in itsSavegamesStorysubfolder. - Check the platform and profile you are using. Save availability can depend on the selected in-game profile and platform. If you created a separate profile for a new campaign, check the older one for the existing playthrough.
- For mod-related failures, troubleshoot mods selectively. Update supported mods first. If the problem began after a major update and involves third-party mods, use Larian’s troubleshooting steps rather than deleting files preemptively.
- Keep the separate backup intact. Do not overwrite your only copy while troubleshooting. Larian’s support page explains that a Windows
.lsvfile can be retrieved for support: Saves – Windows.
