If your PC still runs Windows 8, AVG AntiVirus FREE is one clearly documented antivirus option: AVG lists Windows 8 and 8.1 as compatible, except Windows RT and Starter editions. That establishes compatibility, not that AVG is the best-performing or most protective choice. Windows 8 support ended in January 2016, and antivirus software cannot restore the security updates the operating system no longer receives. Plan to move to a supported operating system or device; if you must keep using this PC temporarily, treat antivirus as only one layer of protection.
First, check whether you mean Windows 8 or Windows 8.1
Product support is not interchangeable between these operating systems. In particular, Bitdefender’s requirements page lists Windows 8.1, but not Windows 8. Check the exact version shown on your PC before choosing software, and check the vendor’s current requirements for your Windows edition and the installer you intend to use.
Windows 8 support ended in January 2016. Microsoft’s lifecycle page gives January 13, 2016, while Microsoft Support’s table gives January 12, 2016; both place the end of support in January 2016. Microsoft says unsupported Windows versions no longer receive software or security updates and become more exposed to risk over time. Its recommendation is to upgrade to a supported Windows release. Antivirus options and what their support pages establish

The available information does not provide comparable Windows 8-specific independent detection or performance results, nor does it establish whether every product continues to deliver current engine and definition updates on each legacy Windows version. Does antivirus make Windows 8 safe?
No antivirus can make an unsupported operating system equivalent to a supported one. Microsoft warns: “While you could continue to use your PC, without continued software and security updates your PC is at greater risk for viruses and malware.” A third-party antivirus may add a malware-defense layer, but it does not supply the missing Windows security patches or eliminate the risks of using an unpatched system.
Microsoft also published historical guidance in 2018 about antivirus compatibility problems caused by some software making unsupported kernel-memory calls, which could lead to stop errors. That guidance is context about compatibility, not a current Windows 8 vulnerability report or evidence that one product is better than another. See Microsoft’s 2018 antivirus compatibility guidance.

What to do if you must keep the PC temporarily
- Identify the OS and edition. Confirm whether the computer runs Windows 8 or 8.1 and whether it is a standard edition, RT, or Starter. Vendor requirements can exclude editions even when the Windows version appears on the list.
- Choose only software with a current, explicit compatibility listing. AVG lists Windows 8/8.1 subject to the edition exclusions above. For any option, verify the current installer and the exact Windows version before installing.
- Check lifecycle and update status. For version-dependent products such as ESET, compare the installed version with the vendor’s current support status. A product that installs is not necessarily still supported or receiving updates.
- Limit exposure while arranging an upgrade. Avoid sensitive activity on the unpatched PC where possible, and do not treat antivirus as a substitute for moving to a supported operating system or device.
- Plan the lasting fix. Microsoft recommends upgrading to a supported Windows release. If the hardware cannot run one, replacement with a supported device is the more durable way to address the operating-system support gap.
