A missing Windows 11 Start pin does not necessarily mean the app was uninstalled. First check whether Start’s view or section changed, then confirm the app is installed. On a work or school device, an administrator-managed layout may control or restore the pins. Windows Backup is relevant when setting up a new PC or reinstalling Windows—not as a general fix for everyday pin loss.
Check whether Start’s view or section changed
Windows 11 Start has Pinned, All, and Recommended sections. Start can remember the last-used view, and a section may be collapsed: Microsoft says Pinned or Recommended can collapse if you remove all pins or turn off all Recommended providers. A collapsed section can make content seem missing without showing that an app was removed. See Microsoft’s Start menu guidance.
- Open Start and inspect the Pinned and All sections.
- If you do not see the app among the pins, select All and look for it there.
- Search for the app by name if it is not obvious in the list.
Check whether the app is still installed
A pin is an entry in Start, not proof that the app itself is present. Search for the app or look in All. If it appears, right-click it and choose Pin to Start. Microsoft documents this as the normal way to add a pin; to remove one, the corresponding command is Unpin from Start.
If the app does not appear in search or All, check whether it is installed and available before treating the missing pin as a shortcut problem. On devices using a managed Start layout, a configured pin for an app that is not installed may not appear until the app is installed. Microsoft explains this behavior in its managed Start layout documentation. A missing pin alone does not establish that the app’s files or personal data were deleted.

Determine whether work or school policy controls Start
If this is a work- or school-managed PC, the organization may define some or all of the Start pins. Microsoft documents full and partial managed layouts: depending on the configuration, users may be unable to change specified pins, and a layout may be reapplied at sign-in. That can make a pin change appear not to stick or make pins return to an organization-defined arrangement. The managed layout guidance describes these controls.
For a managed device, ask the IT administrator whether a Start policy is in effect rather than trying to bypass it. Microsoft’s policy documentation states that the Configure Start Pins Group Policy option is available starting with Windows 11 version 24H2 and KB5062660; the managed-layout documentation also identifies version 24H2 with KB5062660 for an administrator option to apply a layout only once. These version notes concern administrator deployment, not a universal fix for missing pins on personal PCs. See Microsoft’s Start policy settings.

Use Windows Backup only after a new setup or reinstall
If the pins disappeared while setting up a new PC or after reinstalling Windows, Windows Backup may restore app pins when you sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the backup. Microsoft distinguishes the next steps by app type: Store app pins can be selected during setup, while apps outside the Store direct you to a web installer. This restoration path is for setup after a new device or Windows reinstallation, not a general repair control for routine pin loss. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup instructions.

- The app is listed in All or search: pin it again from its Start context menu.
- The app is absent: verify that it is installed and available before troubleshooting Start.
- The pin returns to a set arrangement or changes do not persist on a work or school PC: ask IT whether a managed layout is reapplied.
- The issue began during new-PC setup or after reinstalling Windows: check Windows Backup and the Microsoft account used for the backup.
Microsoft’s support material explains Start’s views and controls, organization-managed layouts, and backup restoration, but it does not establish one universal cause or repair for missing pins on an unmanaged PC. Without more evidence, do not assume a Windows update, profile corruption, malware, or a damaged Start component caused the problem. Begin with the visible section, app availability, and—if applicable—organization policy.
