If Windows still starts, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back if it is available. Back up important files first. Microsoft says Go back is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade, but it depends on the rollback files and other conditions. Rolling back also does not remove your PC from the Windows Insider Program, so stopping preview builds requires a separate step.

Before you roll back

First confirm which Windows build is installed and prepare for recovery. Open Settings > System > About to check the edition, version, and build number, or run winver. This helps distinguish a full version or build upgrade from a smaller update, which may call for a different recovery option.

  • Back up important files to a separate location before using any recovery option.
  • If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key. WinRE may ask for it before allowing access to recovery tools.
  • Do not delete the windows.old or $windows.~bt folders while you may need Go back; Microsoft says the rollback depends on those files being retained.
  • Be prepared to reinstall apps and drivers added after the upgrade. Keep any needed installers or driver sources available.

Microsoft’s Go back instructions say the option is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade. That is a typical window, not a guarantee: Go back can be absent if the required rollback files are gone or other eligibility conditions are not met. An added user account may also need to be removed, and you may need the USB drive used to upgrade Windows.

Use Go back if Windows starts and the option is available

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under recovery options, select Go back if the button is available.
  3. Follow the prompts, including the question about why you are returning to the earlier version.
  4. Review the final warnings, then continue only when you are ready for the rollback to restart the PC.

Microsoft says Go back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverts settings changes made since then. Backing up first is still prudent; file retention does not replace a separate backup.

If Go back is missing, choose recovery based on the problem

Resetting or reinstalling Windows is not an equivalent way to restore the previous Insider build while preserving everything. Choose a path based on whether Windows starts, whether the cause was a small update or a full build upgrade, and what you can afford to lose.

Recovery path When it may fit What it changes or preserves
Uninstall an update A recent smaller update appears to have caused the problem, rather than a full version or build upgrade. Microsoft says files and apps are not affected, but some updates cannot be uninstalled. See Recovery options in Windows.
System Restore A suitable restore point exists and recent system changes are a likely cause. Rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs; personal files are not affected. Availability depends on having a suitable restore point. See System Restore.
Reset this PC Other recovery choices have not resolved the issue and reinstalling Windows is appropriate. You can choose to keep personal files or remove everything, but apps and settings are removed. Back up first. See Reset your PC.
Installation or recovery media Windows will not start, or other recovery choices fail. A clean installation removes everything from the device. OEM recovery media may include device-specific drivers and factory apps. See Recovery options in Windows.

If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) may open automatically after repeated failed startup attempts. If it does not, create Windows installation media on another working PC, start the affected PC from that media, and choose Repair my PC to reach recovery tools. Microsoft’s Windows recovery environment guide describes how to access WinRE.

From WinRE, available options can include uninstalling updates, System Restore, Reset this PC, or reinstalling Windows. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, have the recovery key ready because it may be required to use most WinRE options.

Stop receiving Insider preview builds separately

Going back to an earlier build does not automatically unenroll the PC. Microsoft states, “Going back to an earlier build won’t remove you from the Insider Program.” Its Insider settings guidance describes opting out when the device is on a production build. If you need to return to a stable build but normal opt-out is not available, Microsoft describes restoring the device to its original operating system with an appropriate recovery image. That is a separate and potentially more disruptive recovery path, so back up before proceeding.
