A production company is responsible for managing the making of a particular film; “film studio” is a broader industry label that can cover production, financing, commissioning, or distribution. A studio may make a film itself or hire a separate production company. Because the roles can overlap, the credits and documented responsibilities for the individual film are the best guide.
What is a production company?
The Library of Congress defines a production company as “the name of the company under whose financial, technical, and organizational management a moving image work is made.” In practical terms, it is a project-facing company associated with organizing and managing a film’s creation.
That definition does not mean the production company necessarily supplied all the money or controlled every creative decision. A film can involve multiple companies and people, with responsibilities divided among them.
What is a film studio?
“Film studio” is a broader, context-dependent industry term rather than a precise description of one project function. Depending on the company and film, a studio may be involved in production, financing, commissioning, or distribution. It may also handle more than one of these functions.

One documented arrangement is for a film company—described in a 2013 European Commission Joint Research Centre report as usually a Hollywood studio—to hire a production company for a specific movie. That example illustrates how the labels can refer to different participants in one film; it does not establish a rule for every film or territory.
How the roles compare
| Question | Production company | Film studio |
|---|---|---|
| What the label suggests | Responsibility for the creation and management of a particular work. | A broad company label; the company’s specific role on the film needs to be checked. |
| Typical relationship | May manage project production and work alongside co-producers. | May hire a production company for a film or take part in several industry functions. |
| Does the label establish distribution? | No. Distribution is not inherent in the production-company definition. | No. Do not infer distribution from “studio”; check who is credited with making the film available. |
| How to confirm the role | Review on-screen credits and reliable project documentation. | Look for evidence of the company’s project-specific responsibilities; branding alone may not establish them. |
These are useful ways to read the terms, not mutually exclusive corporate categories. A company can take on multiple functions, and more than one company can be involved in a film.

Production, distribution, and the people doing the work
Production and distribution are different functions
The Library of Congress defines a distributor as “the person or corporate body which sells, leases, rents, or in some manner makes available moving image works.” That is distinct from its definition of a production company. A single company may have both production and distribution responsibilities, but one role should not be assumed from the other.
Producers and production-office staff have separate roles
For feature films, the Producers Guild of America’s “Produced By” credit guidance applies to people primarily responsible for originating and/or managing production and delivery. The Guild describes the work as involving sustained, substantial decisions about creative, production, budgetary, and legal matters across production stages. This is Guild guidance, not a universal legal definition of a producer.

Other production roles focus on day-to-day operations. The Guild describes production managers as handling matters such as set and location logistics and personnel management. Production coordinators handle assigned logistics, which can include equipment contracts, purchase orders, insurance, travel, shipping, call sheets, and production reports. These are roles within a production operation, not alternate names for the studio or production company.
Staffing lines vary. A production manager or unit production manager may also perform line-producer functions, depending on a film’s scale and scope, union status, and whether it is independently produced or made within a studio system. The Texas Film Commission likewise describes producers as overseeing production for financial and managerial control while working with the production company, and production managers or UPMs as tracking budgets, approving schedules and call sheets, and hiring or firing crew.

How to work out what a company did on a specific film
Credits are evidence of a company’s credited relationship to a work, but they are not necessarily a complete map of the business arrangements. Library of Congress cataloging guidance treats production-company and co-production-company credits as indicators of some degree of overall responsibility. It advises using the terms shown in the work unless reliable secondary research shows that a credit is inaccurate or unclear.
A company logo or opening credit may not tell you exactly what the company did. The Library of Congress cautions that a studio head can receive a “vanity credit” without making a major creative contribution. It also notes that a “presented by” credit may identify a production company or a sponsor, depending on the evidence. Clarify the credit’s function where possible rather than treating every named company as having the same role.

- Are multiple production companies credited?
- Does reliable project documentation explain a vague “presents” or similar credit?
For a general definition, “production company” points most directly to responsibility for making a particular work. “Studio” is broader. For an individual film, identify the credited and documented functions rather than relying on the label alone.
