Dock safely by preparing lines and fenders before the approach, briefing everyone on the line sequence, and using only enough power to keep steerage and control. Read how wind and current are moving the boat relative to the berth: if practical, use the stronger force to help orient the approach, and keep a clear route to stop or try again. There is no universal wind or current cutoff—or single gear sequence—that works for every boat.

Prepare before entering the berth area

Take time to assess the approach while there is still room to maneuver. Note wind direction, current direction and strength, traffic, nearby boats and pilings, and how much open water you have to turn away and retry. Decide where the boat will go if the approach does not work; do not commit to a path that leaves no safe way out.

Before getting close to the dock, assign crew jobs and say which line will be passed first and where it will be secured. The Coast Guard Boat Crew Handbook advises preparing mooring lines and fenders before the approach, and having a spare line and movable fender ready. A boat hook can be a useful optional tool for an assistant to push away from a dock or other object, as described in the Texas Boater Safety Course Manual.

  • Position fenders where contact with the dock or pilings is likely.
  • Keep the planned lines ready to handle and clear of the propeller.
  • Tell each crew member their task and the line order before the maneuver begins.
  • Do not assume someone on shore is prepared or practiced to take a line; confirm the plan with them first.

These preparation and crew-coordination principles are also covered in America’s Boating Compass’ docking guidance.

Use enough power to steer, not momentum you cannot manage

The Coast Guard Boat Crew Handbook’s guidance is to “Emphasize control, not speed, when docking.” That does not mean every boat should approach at idle: stronger wind can require more maneuvering speed to preserve control. Use the least power that lets you maintain steerage and respond to the conditions, while avoiding excess momentum that is difficult to stop.

Boat response depends on hull shape, windage, propulsion and steering. A tactic that works on one boat may not work the same way on another. If you are unfamiliar with how your boat steers in reverse or reacts to wind, practice in open water or take a hands-on boat-handling lesson before relying on that response in a tight berth. The handbook recommends practice in varied conditions.

Choose an approach that accounts for the force direction

The Coast Guard handbook says to “Always take advantage of wind and current when docking or mooring.” US Sailing’s instructor resources offer a related principle: point the bow into the wind or current, whichever is stronger. These are planning principles, not guarantees. The stronger force, boat handling, berth layout and maneuvering room all matter; do not force a bow-in approach if it leaves you unable to control or stop the boat.

When wind or current is carrying the boat toward the dock

The Texas manual describes a near-parallel approach in this situation, allowing the force to help move the boat toward the berth. Avoid arriving with more speed than you can manage, and keep enough room to correct or pull away if the boat begins closing on the dock too quickly. The exact approach depends on the boat and the available space.

When wind or current is pushing the boat away

The Texas manual describes a more angled approach for this case, with reverse used to stop and the engine coordinated with lines to bring the stern in. It gives example angles for particular situations, not a universal docking angle or prescription. Reverse response differs by propulsion and steering setup; the manual distinguishes a specific stern-in maneuver for inboards from one for outboards or sterndrives. Follow your boat’s handling characteristics rather than copying an angle or gear sequence without room to adapt.

Keep people and lines clear during the maneuver

Once the boat is alongside, pass and secure the line selected for that maneuver, keeping loose line out of the propeller’s path. Keep crew clear of pinch points between the boat and dock. No one should try to catch or stop a moving boat with their hands or feet. Coordinate engine, helm and line handling so the boat remains under control; do not let a crew member take a line in a way that places them between the hull and dock.

Abort early if control or a safe retry is in doubt

The cited manuals do not establish a universal numerical wind or current limit for safe docking. A condition that is manageable for one operator and boat may exceed another boat’s capabilities. If the approach is deteriorating, you cannot maintain steerage or stop, or you no longer have a clear route to retry, do not force the boat into the berth. Pull away if safe, wait for conditions to ease, or use a sheltered alternative where available. Use manufacturer guidance and local rules alongside general training material, which cannot account for every vessel and berth.
