Running a model on infrastructure you control can keep prompts away from a third-party model host, but your app, device, network, logs, backups, integrations, and administrators can still expose them. Share only what is needed, verify where data goes and how long it stays there, and do not treat an AI coach as a substitute for clinical care.
What self-hosting changes—and what it does not
A locally run model can remove one important data handoff: sending your conversation to an outside model provider. NIST’s chatbot prototype used a local installation so interactions with its language model stayed within the organization’s secure network. That describes the prototype, not every product described as local or self-hosted. A tool may still contact remote services for inference, telemetry, integrations, or other features.
Even if the model runs locally, the surrounding system handles sensitive information. A person with access to the device or administrator account may be able to read conversations. Weak network security, exposed services, compromised devices, retained logs, or cloud-synced backups can also undermine privacy. NIST identifies data exposure and unauthorized access among chatbot risks, alongside prompt injection and hallucinations. NIST’s chatbot security project explains these risks and its prototype’s design.
Check where your conversations go and remain
Before sharing identifying or highly sensitive details, trace the data path rather than relying on the product label. Check the app’s privacy and technical documentation, and ask the administrator if you do not control the system.

- Model requests: Does the app perform inference on your machine, or send prompts, summaries, or other inputs to a remote model or service?
- Connected features: Do plugins, integrations, analytics, crash reporting, or telemetry transmit conversation content or related data?
- Storage: Where are conversation history, persistent memory, diagnostic logs, and backups stored? Who can access them?
- Retention and deletion: How long does each copy remain, and does deletion remove it from logs and backups as well as the visible chat history?
- Access and security: Is the host protected by individual accounts, strong authentication, and appropriate network controls? Who administers it?
OWASP’s LLM application security guidance highlights privacy risks from data collection and retention, and recommends minimizing collection and retention while protecting personal data in transit and at rest. NIST’s retention-risk guidance discusses assessing both the likelihood and impact of retention-related problems in the context of authentication services; it is a useful risk lens, not guidance specifically written for AI coaches.
Reduce the amount of sensitive information at risk
- Start with a low-stakes prompt. Test the tool without names, addresses, workplace details, medical identifiers, or other facts that could identify you.
- Share the minimum useful context. You can often describe a situation in general terms rather than naming people or providing precise locations and dates.
- Use a private, secured account and device. Restrict access to the machine and account that hold the conversations, and secure the network where the service runs.
- Turn off unnecessary history or integrations. If the app offers controls for memory, conversation storage, telemetry, or connected services, review them before sharing personal material.
- Delete records you do not need. First check what deletion covers; removing a conversation from the interface may not remove logs or backups.
These steps can reduce exposure, but they cannot prove that a system has zero risk. If you cannot establish where data is sent, retained, or accessible, avoid entering details whose disclosure would seriously harm you.

How this differs from a hosted coach
“Self-hosted” and “hosted” are not enough information to rank two services. Compare the actual arrangements for your particular tool:

| How reliable are its responses? | The model’s limits and the consequences of relying on its advice; local execution does not establish accuracy or suitability. |
The available official sources do not provide a product-by-product comparison, so they cannot support a blanket claim that self-hosted coaches are safer than hosted ones. The relevant question is whether the specific system’s data flows, controls, and retention match your needs.

Privacy is not the same as clinical safety
Keeping a conversation away from a third-party model provider does not make an AI coach qualified to assess or treat a mental-health condition. The privacy and security guidance cited here does not establish that an AI coach is clinically effective or suitable for any individual. For clinical concerns or urgent support, contact a qualified professional or appropriate local service rather than relying on a chatbot.

In January 2024, the FTC wrote that “Model-as-a-service companies must also abide by their commitments to customers regardless of how or where the commitment was made.” The statement concerns companies’ privacy commitments; it is not a blanket assurance that every private self-hosted installation has the same legal obligations. The FTC has also said companies should maintain security appropriate to the sensitive data they hold. Which legal duties apply depends on the operator, data, and circumstances. In September 2025, the FTC announced an inquiry into consumer-facing AI companion chatbots, seeking information about how companies assess potential impacts, explain capabilities and data practices, and use or share conversation data. An inquiry is not a final finding about all companion chatbots, and it does not establish that a particular self-hosted tool is safe or unsafe. Read the FTC announcement.
