Choose LM Studio if you want a graphical way to discover, download, load, and chat with local models, with documented APIs and developer tools alongside it. Choose Ollama if you prefer a terminal-first workflow for pulling and running models and using a local API. Both can run local language models; neither is a universal speed winner. Your operating system, hardware, preferred workflow, and integration needs should decide.
What is the practical difference between Ollama and LM Studio?
Both tools let you run language models locally, provided the model’s weights are available on your machine and fit its memory and processing resources. LM Studio describes a flow of downloading model weights, loading them into memory, and chatting in the app. Ollama’s documentation centers on terminal commands and a local server/API workflow.
The difference is primarily how you want to work, not a proven difference in answer quality or speed. LM Studio also offers CLI and headless options; Ollama can be used through its local API, not just interactively in a terminal.
Which one fits your workflow?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Browse models and chat through a desktop interface | LM Studio | Its documentation describes a Discover area, model loading, and a Chat tab. LM Studio getting started. |
| Pull and run models from a terminal | Ollama | Its quickstart demonstrates terminal model pulls and local execution. LM Studio also has an lms CLI, so the choice is not GUI versus CLI alone. Ollama quickstart. |
| Integrate a local model with an application | Compare the exact API features you need | LM Studio documents native REST, OpenAI-compatible, and Anthropic-compatible interfaces. Ollama documents a local API and compatibility options. Client compatibility and endpoint behavior matter more than the label “API.” LM Studio REST API; Ollama API introduction. |
| Run without a desktop window | Either may fit | LM Studio documents its headless llmster service; Ollama documents a local server workflow. Check deployment-specific requirements in each product’s current documentation. LM Studio headless documentation. |
| Use MCP or a particular SDK | Check the needed implementation | LM Studio documents MCP features and JavaScript and Python SDKs. Confirm the particular tool and behavior your application requires in its developer docs. LM Studio developer documentation. |
How do their developer tools compare?
LM Studio
LM Studio documents a native REST API under /api/v1/*, OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible endpoints, JavaScript and Python SDKs, CLI model management, MCP features, and the headless llmster package. Its documentation describes the headless service as usable on servers, cloud instances, and CI. Match the endpoint semantics, tool support, client library, and deployment mode to your project rather than assuming all compatible APIs behave identically. Ollama
Ollama documents a local API at http://localhost:11434/api, along with OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic client options. Its documentation also distinguishes local API use from direct hosted API requests: local requests do not require an API key, while direct cloud requests do. Local inference and hosted inference are different paths, so evaluate them separately when deciding where prompts and processing go. Ollama API introduction.
Will your computer run the model you want?
Check the model and the exact machine, not just the runner’s name. Downloading model weights uses disk space; running a model uses memory, and larger context windows can require more. The supported operating systems, architectures, accelerators, and drivers differ between products and sometimes by platform. Verify current requirements before installing.

Use model-specific memory figures carefully
As one example, Ollama’s quickstart says the Gemma 4 E2B download is about 7.2 GB and recommends 8 GB of available VRAM or Mac unified memory for that example. It also notes that larger context windows need more memory. These figures describe that example, not a minimum for Ollama, LM Studio, or every model. Ollama quickstart.

The official documentation reviewed does not establish an apples-to-apples winner for speed or output quality. Results depend on factors such as model, quantization, context length, settings, hardware, and workload. If performance is decisive, compare the same model with matched settings on the same machine and task; do not infer a general advantage from a single run or a product’s interface.
