Choose whether images load automatically
- Automatic display: Message images appear without an extra tap.
- Ask first: You choose whether to load images in a message. Google documents this as an option for slow connections or when you want to save mobile data.
The ask-first option gives you more control over when external images load, while automatic display is more convenient. Whichever preference you choose, Gmail may still ask for confirmation if it considers a sender or message suspicious.

Google’s Gmail Help documentation says, “Google scans images for signs of suspicious content before you receive them.” Google also describes safeguards intended to prevent senders from using image loading to learn information about your computer or location, set or read browser cookies, or deliver known harmful software. These protections do not make email opens untrackable: Google notes that senders may sometimes know whether an image email was opened. See Google’s Gmail Help page on displaying images.
