Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To roll back a Windows 11 Beta build, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back if it is available. Microsoft says this option keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses Settings changes made since then. Back up important files first; “keeps personal files” does not mean every app, driver, setting, or later change will remain.
How do I roll back a Windows 11 Beta build without losing my files?
First check whether Windows still offers its built-in rollback:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
Microsoft Windows 11 (USB) | $128.99 | Buy on Amazon |

- Save your work and make a separate backup of important files.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under recovery options, select Go back if it appears, then follow the prompts.
Microsoft says the option is available for a limited time, in most cases 10 days after upgrading. That is a typical window, not a guarantee for every PC. Windows automatically deletes the previous installation after 10 days, and deleting it earlier also removes the ability to go back. Check the option in Settings rather than relying only on the number of days.
During Go back, personal files are kept. Apps and drivers installed after the upgrade are removed, and Settings changes made since then are reversed. Apps added, removed, or updated after upgrading may not be available or work properly after the rollback. See Microsoft’s Go back to the previous version of Windows guidance for the option’s requirements and prompts.

What to check before selecting Go back
- Back up important files. Microsoft advises making a backup before using recovery options; some recovery choices can result in data loss. A separate backup is protection, not a substitute for Go back.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled. Microsoft says most WinRE recovery options on encrypted devices require it. Keep it available in case Windows asks for it.
- Do not delete the previous installation. Keep the
windows.oldand$windows.~btfolders while you want the rollback option. Removing the previous Windows installation can make Go back unavailable. - Check other prerequisites. Microsoft lists removal of user accounts added after the upgrade and, if you used one to upgrade, the USB drive used for that upgrade. Its rollback instructions describe these requirements.
If Go back is missing
If Go back does not appear under Recovery, the normal in-place rollback path may no longer be available. Finding a windows.old folder manually does not guarantee that Windows can restore the earlier build through Go back. Choose a recovery option based on whether the problem followed a recent update or whether you need to reinstall or restore Windows.
| Option | What it targets | Personal files | Apps and settings | Boot requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a Windows update | A recent Windows update, rather than a broader version rollback | Microsoft says files are not affected | Microsoft says apps are not affected | Can be accessed through Windows recovery options; see Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows for available routes |
| Go back | The previous Windows version/build | Keeps personal files | Removes apps and drivers installed after upgrading and reverses later Settings changes | Start in Settings if the option is available |
| System Restore | System files and settings | Does not affect personal files | May affect recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings | Available from Windows or recovery options, depending on the situation |
| Reset this PC > Keep my files | Reinstalls Windows | Preserves personal files | Removes apps and settings | Use Windows recovery options; back up first and have the BitLocker key if needed |
| Recovery media or clean installation | Reinstalls Windows or restores the PC using recovery media | May remove everything, depending on the method | Do not treat it as equivalent to Go back | May require booting from recovery or installation media |
The effects above follow Microsoft’s descriptions in Recovery options in Windows, Reset your PC, and Go back to the previous version of Windows. A USB recovery drive is a last-resort recovery option, not a way to perform the Go back rollback.

Does Windows.old let you restore the old build?
Not by itself. Microsoft describes Windows.old as a temporary place to retrieve files for 10 days in the specific upgrade case where you chose Nothing. That is file retrieval, not a guaranteed full rollback. This retrieval method does not work after Reset this PC or after a fresh installation from media that formats the drive. See Microsoft’s Windows.old file recovery instructions.
Does going back remove the PC from Windows Insider?
No. Microsoft states, “Going back to an earlier build won’t remove you from the Insider Program.” If your goal is to stop receiving preview builds, handle the Insider settings separately; rolling back alone does not opt the device out, and a later preview build may install. Microsoft also describes restoring a device to its original operating system using a recovery image as a separate route. Back up first, as that process is not the same as Go back. See the Microsoft recovery options and Go back guidance.
