WhatsApp’s multiple-account feature lets you use up to two accounts on one mobile device. You need a separate phone number for the second account and must register and verify it. A second SIM or eSIM can provide another number, but having two SIMs alone does not create a second WhatsApp account.
What you need for two WhatsApp accounts
- A second phone number: It must be a distinct number that you own and can verify by SMS or phone call. WhatsApp registers accounts to phone numbers, not SIM slots. WhatsApp’s registration guidance explains the number-verification requirement.
- WhatsApp on a mobile device: WhatsApp describes multiple-account support as mobile-only. Its published instructions do not specify a separate operating-system minimum for this feature.
- A supported operating system: WhatsApp currently lists Android 6.0 or newer and iOS 15.1 or newer. Its support page says iOS 15.5 or newer will be required starting November 30, 2026. Check WhatsApp’s supported operating systems for the current baseline.
How to add a second WhatsApp account
Start from your primary account on your phone. WhatsApp’s help guidance describes the flow below; exact labels or placement may differ by platform or app version.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
- Select the add-account control beside your profile name.
- Accept the terms, enter the separate phone number, and request its verification code.
- Enter the code sent by SMS or provided by phone call, then complete the second account’s profile.
WhatsApp’s account-switching help page says the feature supports two accounts. Each account can have its own profile photo, About field, notification preferences, and privacy settings.
How to switch accounts and receive notifications
Open the account menu in WhatsApp and choose the account you want to use. Messages and calls for an inactive account can still generate alerts; switch to that account to view its content. The account menu’s exact appearance may vary between app versions.

Dual SIM and eSIM: what they change
Dual SIM or eSIM can make it easier to access two phone numbers on one handset, but the SIM configuration does not automatically add or select a WhatsApp account. Each WhatsApp account is associated with the number used to register and verify it. To add a second account, register a distinct number in WhatsApp. See WhatsApp’s guidance on multiple phone numbers or accounts.
WhatsApp accounts versus linked devices
Using two accounts on one phone is different from linking one account to a companion device, WhatsApp Web, or desktop. WhatsApp says multiple accounts are currently supported on mobile, and the secondary account must be created from the primary mobile device. A companion device can be paired with the secondary account, but linking devices is not a way to create or switch between accounts on the web or desktop. Using WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business instead
Running the standard WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps is another option, separate from the in-app account switcher. WhatsApp’s registration guidance says each app requires a unique phone number, and its multiple-account help page says account switching is not available in WhatsApp Business. If you need two accounts within one app, use the multiple-account feature where available; if you want one account in each app, each needs its own number. - Restart the phone.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest available version.
Changing which SIM is active is not the same as changing the number registered to your WhatsApp account. To use a different number for an existing account, change it through WhatsApp rather than assuming the app follows the handset’s SIM selection. WhatsApp’s help guidance on multiple numbers and accounts covers that distinction.
