Neither Sunday nor Monday is the universally correct first day of a calendar week. Choose the display that best fits how you plan and the convention used by people you coordinate with. If you need shared ISO week numbers, use Monday and set the first week to require at least four days in the new year.
What does “first day of the week” mean in a calendar?
It usually means the first weekday column shown in a calendar view. That display choice is distinct from both the first workday and the days treated as the weekend. Unicode’s CLDR calendar week data defines a regional default for the first displayed day, which a user or application can override.
As a result, a Sunday-first calendar does not say that Sunday is your first workday. Nor does a Monday-first layout necessarily describe your work schedule. These are separate conventions.
Sunday or Monday: which display should you choose?
Choose the layout that makes your recurring week easiest to scan. If you are coordinating with other people, matching their calendar convention can make shared schedules easier to read. Neither option is inherently better; the useful choice depends on familiar layout and planning needs.

How is the first week of the year determined?
The calendar’s first displayed day and its week-numbering rule are separate settings. Unicode CLDR calls the minimum number of days required in the new year minDays. A week counts as the year’s first week only if the week beginning on the configured first day contains at least that many days in the new year. Changing either setting can affect which week-year a date belongs to and whether a year has 52 or 53 weeks. See CLDR’s week-data documentation.
For ISO 8601-compatible week numbering, the week starts Monday and week 1 must contain at least four days in the new year. Microsoft describes this as the first week containing the year’s first Thursday in a Gregorian calendar. Its Windows locale settings also distinguish this from other options: the week containing January 1, or the first full week after January 1. Why a date near New Year can have different week numbers
Week numbering can assign a date near New Year to a week-year different from its calendar year. CLDR’s example for 1998 shows that Monday as the first day and a four-day minimum make week 1 run from December 29, 1997, through January 4, 1998. A Sunday start produces a different first-week assignment under the corresponding rules.

- For a personal view: use the first-day setting that makes your week easiest to read and plan.
- For shared week numbers: agree on ISO-compatible numbering—Monday plus a four-day minimum—so “week 1” has a defined meaning.
- For work schedules: set the calendar display and workweek separately if your app offers both; the first displayed column does not determine the first workday.
Calendar software may follow a regional locale by default, but CLDR’s documentation recognizes that the preference can be overridden. Apple likewise documents a locale’s preferred first weekday separately from the first day after the weekend: Apple’s Calendar firstWeekday reference.
