The GeForce RTX 5080 is the closest alternative here for buyers who want a high-end NVIDIA card and CUDA support; the RTX 5070 Ti is a lower-tier NVIDIA option. For gaming value, compare AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 as well. None matches the RTX 5090: in Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 4K rasterization hierarchy, these cards range from 52.1% to 69.8% of its result. For AI, there is no universal winner—the right fit depends on the software, model, precision, and VRAM required.

How the alternatives compare

The gaming percentages below are Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 suite averages, with the RTX 5090 set to 100%. They describe that publication’s tested games and settings, not the result you should expect in every game. Memory configurations are listed by NVIDIA and AMD. NVIDIA’s AI TOPS figures are vendor specifications, not cross-vendor workload benchmarks.

GPU Listed memory 4K Ultra raster vs. RTX 5090 4K ray tracing vs. RTX 5090 Vendor AI figure
GeForce RTX 5090 32 GB GDDR7 100% reference 100% reference 3,352 AI TOPS (NVIDIA)
GeForce RTX 5080 16 GB GDDR7 69.8% 65.7% 1,801 AI TOPS (NVIDIA)
GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16 GB GDDR7 61.9% 57.3% 1,406 AI TOPS (NVIDIA)
Radeon RX 9070 XT 16 GB GDDR6 59.4% 47.0% Not directly comparable: AMD lists AI accelerator specifications, not an equivalent AI TOPS figure.
Radeon RX 9070 16 GB GDDR6 52.1% Not stated in Tom’s Hardware’s cited 2026 hierarchy. 112 AI accelerators listed by AMD; not directly comparable to NVIDIA AI TOPS.

The raster and ray-tracing percentages are separate comparisons from Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 hierarchy. Do not use one as a prediction for the other, or as a measure of AI performance.

Which card makes sense for gaming?

Choose the RTX 5080 for the closest NVIDIA step down

Among the alternatives here, the RTX 5080 is the strongest 4K raster option after the RTX 5090 and retains NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem. But its 16 GB of GDDR7 is half the 5090’s listed 32 GB, and Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 4K averages put it at 69.8% of the flagship in rasterization and 65.7% in ray tracing. It is a substantial step down, not a 5090-equivalent card.

Consider the RTX 5070 Ti for a lower NVIDIA tier

The RTX 5070 Ti also has 16 GB of GDDR7 and CUDA support. In the same 2026 hierarchy it reaches 61.9% of the RTX 5090’s 4K raster result and 57.3% of its 4K ray-tracing result. It is a reasonable comparison for buyers prioritizing NVIDIA compatibility who do not need the RTX 5080 tier, but the hierarchy does not establish how much better value it offers at current retail prices.

Compare the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 for gaming value

The Radeon RX 9070 XT is close to the RTX 5070 Ti in Tom’s Hardware’s 4K raster results (59.4% versus 61.9% of the RTX 5090), while the RX 9070 reaches 52.1%. Both Radeon cards have 16 GB of GDDR6. They are gaming alternatives, not direct substitutes for a CUDA-dependent workflow.

Tom’s Hardware characterizes the Radeon cards as strong for native raster gaming and judged NVIDIA’s DLSS feature support broader than AMD FSR support in its 2026 assessment. Treat those as publication judgments at that time: support varies by game and software version. Compare native raster, ray tracing, and the upscaling or frame-generation features you actually use rather than assuming a single ranking covers all three.

Which alternative fits AI workloads?

For CUDA-dependent software, start with NVIDIA

NVIDIA lists CUDA capability for the RTX 50 series, and its developer GPU listing includes the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti. If your required package explicitly depends on CUDA, that is a concrete reason to favor one of those cards. It does not guarantee that a particular model or project will fit in memory or run well.

NVIDIA’s current GeForce comparison page lists 3,352 AI TOPS for the RTX 5090, 1,801 for the RTX 5080, 1,406 for the RTX 5070 Ti, and 988 for the RTX 5070. These are NVIDIA-reported figures; they do not rank AMD cards or predict performance in a particular AI application.

Do not infer application support from AMD accelerator counts

AMD lists 112 AI accelerators for the RX 9070, along with peak-precision specifications. Those hardware figures do not establish compatibility with a specific AI package and cannot be compared directly with NVIDIA’s AI TOPS. Check the framework and application documentation for the exact GPU support you need before choosing an AMD card for AI work.

Check memory and workload details before buying

AI performance depends on the software and version, model, precision or quantization, batch size, context length, and other settings. Model weights, working data, and the workload’s memory demands all matter. A 16 GB card may suit one use case and fail to accommodate another; the available evidence does not establish a matched AI performance winner among these four alternatives for local LLM inference, image generation, fine-tuning, or training.

NVIDIA said in its January 6, 2025 RTX 50-series launch announcement that the cards support FP4 and that this can reduce the memory footprint for local generative-AI models compared with previous-generation hardware. That is NVIDIA’s product claim, not an independent cross-vendor benchmark.

How launch prices compare—and what they do not tell you

NVIDIA’s 2025 US launch MSRPs were $1,999 for the RTX 5090, $999 for the RTX 5080, $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti, and $549 for the RTX 5070. These are historical launch prices, not October 2026 store prices. They do not establish current availability, a value winner, or what a particular board-partner model should cost. The figures above do not give a comparable AMD launch price, so use current local listings when comparing the Radeon cards.

Check the exact card and PC fit before ordering

  • Compare the price and availability of the exact model in your region; board-partner versions of the same GPU can differ.
  • Confirm the card’s dimensions against your case clearance, and check its power connectors, recommended power supply, and display outputs.
  • For the AMD RX 9070 reference specification, AMD lists two 8-pin auxiliary power connectors and a 650 W minimum PSU recommendation. Verify the chosen board-partner card, since its requirements may differ.
  • For AI, confirm that your intended framework and application support the GPU and that the model and working data fit in its available VRAM.
