To remove something an AI assistant remembers, inspect its memory or personalization controls, then separately check chat history, connected apps or files, and model-improvement settings. These are different controls: switching memory off may stop future personalization without deleting existing memories, and deleting a chat may not remove information saved elsewhere.
This guide covers ChatGPT, the updated consumer Copilot app with a personal Microsoft account, and Gemini. Settings and eligibility can vary by account and rollout; follow the linked live help pages if your screen differs.
What does an AI assistant remember—and where should you look?
“Memory” is not one universal store. An assistant may personalize replies using saved memory entries, information drawn from earlier chats, conversation or activity history, files, or connected apps. A training or product-improvement setting is another separate control: it governs certain uses of conversations, not whether they remain visible in your history or available for personalization.
Use this audit for any assistant covered below:
- Open the assistant’s memory or personalization settings. Review saved entries or the available memory summary, and remove or correct the detail there if the option exists.
- Find and delete the conversation or activity in which you shared the information. A chat deletion may not erase a separate memory or connected-source copy.
- Check files and connected apps that may contain the same detail. Remove the relevant source or disconnect the app where appropriate.
- Review history, activity, and model-improvement controls separately. Choose the control that matches what you want; none should be assumed to perform all the others’ jobs.
- Allow for any deletion delay or retention period the service documents. A user-facing deletion action is not always immediate across every system.
How to review and delete memory in ChatGPT
Inspect saved memories and personalization
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account’s memory experience, you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Review the available summary or saved-memory controls and delete the entry you no longer want used. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers or correct a detail in conversation, but a summary is only a high-level view and may not show every detail or source ChatGPT can reference. Delete every relevant source
OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Deleting the chat where you shared a detail does not necessarily delete a saved memory created from it. If you want a detail no longer used, check the memory controls and delete the originating conversation too. Also look for relevant files in Library and connected apps: a fact can remain available through a source other than the chat. Telling ChatGPT “don’t mention this again” can affect future personalization behavior, but does not delete the underlying source.
Know what the off switches do
Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days; the original chats remain in your history unless you delete them separately. Saved memories are separate. Turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history, but saved memories still need to be deleted separately. OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Details are in OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT help page.

Improve the model for everyone is a different setting: turning it off means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, but saved chats remain in history. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary; OpenAI says they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. How to review and delete memory in Microsoft Copilot
Personal Microsoft accounts in the updated consumer app
For the updated consumer Copilot app and a personal Microsoft account, open Settings > Personalization > Manage next to Saved memories. Delete an individual item or choose Delete all memories. To stop Copilot saving memories, switch off Saved memories—but Microsoft states that turning off Copilot Memory does not automatically delete memories already saved. Manage chat history separately. These instructions concern the updated consumer app, which Microsoft says became available on web, desktop, and mobile on August 18, 2026; they do not cover organizational accounts or Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps. Microsoft 365 Copilot for work
Do not use the personal-account route as a substitute for workplace instructions. Microsoft’s separate Microsoft 365 Copilot guidance describes memories that may draw on Copilot Chat conversations, usage data, Microsoft 365 work data, usage signals, and profile information. Its route is Copilot Chat settings > Chat settings > Personalization > Manage saved memories. Turning off the control does not itself delete existing items. Remove details learned from past chats
On the Gemini website, open Settings & help > Personal Intelligence > Memory to manage past-chat personalization, if the feature is available for your account. To remove a fact learned from earlier conversations, delete all Gemini Apps Activity chats containing that information. Google notes there may be a short delay before Gemini stops using a deleted chat for personalization. To correct a detail, correct Gemini in a chat while Memory is enabled. Eligibility varies: Google’s cited past-chat Memory guidance lists personal-account and age requirements and excludes work, school, and supervised accounts. Clean up connected Google apps as well
If the remembered fact came from a connected Google app, address both the Gemini conversation and the connected source. Delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect the app containing the information. Disconnecting alone can leave the detail in a past chat; deleting the chat alone can leave it available in the connected app. Removing or updating an item in a connected app may take days to affect Gemini’s experience. Review Gemini Apps Activity and Keep Activity
Gemini Apps Activity is managed separately from the past-chat Memory setting. Review or delete activity and turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity or My Activity. With Keep Activity off, Google says conversations may still be associated with your account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. A practical final check
- Confirm the detail is gone from the assistant’s visible memory controls, where provided.
- Remove the conversation or activity that supplied it if you do not want it used through history.
- Remove or disconnect relevant files and connected apps rather than assuming chat deletion covers them.
- Check whether you changed memory, history/activity, or model-improvement controls; they serve different purposes.
- Read the service’s retention notes before treating a deletion as immediate or system-wide.
