You can turn an old Android phone into an offline music player by copying audio files you own onto it, opening them in a player that supports local files, and testing playback with the phone disconnected from the internet. This avoids relying on a streaming subscription or an active connection while listening. Whether the setup works depends on the phone’s condition, available storage, supported apps, and audio outputs.

Check the phone before setting it up

First, confirm that the phone turns on, can hold a charge, has enough usable storage for your music, and can play audio through an output you can use, such as its built-in speaker, a compatible wired connection, or Bluetooth. The available ports, card-slot support, compatible Android apps, and battery life vary by model and condition; there is no universal minimum Android version or hardware configuration established for this purpose.

Choose a music player that can read audio files stored on the phone. If one is already installed, try it first. Otherwise, check that the phone can install a compatible local-file player. Allow file access if the app requests it so it can find your tracks.

Copy music files from a computer

For a no-subscription setup, use audio files you legally obtained and have the right to copy. Spotify’s Android help also documents playback of local audio files: enable Local audio files in the app’s Settings, then look under Your Library > Local Files. The app may request permission to access files on the device. Spotify’s Local files instructions cover this feature.

Transfer from a Windows computer

  1. Unlock the phone and connect it to the computer using a USB cable that fits the phone and supports data transfer.
  2. If the phone prompts you, allow access to data or files.
  3. Open the phone’s storage on the computer and drag your music files into a folder on the device.
  4. Disconnect the phone safely, open your local-file music player, and check that the tracks appear and play.

Transfer from a Mac

Spotify’s instructions say to use an Android file-transfer app; a USB cable may also be needed. Follow the transfer app’s directions to copy your audio files to the phone, then open the music player and verify the tracks. A cable’s connector and data-transfer support must match the particular phone and computer. See Spotify’s Local files instructions for its current guidance.

Test that playback really works offline

  1. Start playback while the phone is still connected, and confirm that the track plays through your intended headphones or speaker.
  2. Turn on airplane mode, or disable both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
  3. Start another track from the phone’s local library and confirm playback continues without an internet connection.

This test distinguishes files stored on the phone from music that an app still needs to stream. Once setup is complete, you can turn off radios you do not need. Organize tracks into folders or playlists if your player supports them, and keep a separate copy of important music files on a computer or other storage.

Local files and streaming-service downloads are different

Ordinary audio files copied to the phone are the most direct fit for a player intended to stay offline. Streaming-service downloads are typically managed inside the service’s app and can be subject to account, subscription, app, or reconnection conditions; do not treat them as permanent exported music files.

Option What the official guidance establishes Offline-use condition
Local audio files in Spotify Spotify documents local-file playback on Android; device permission may be required. Spotify Support Use files stored on the phone and verify playback with connectivity disabled.
Spotify downloads Premium users can download albums, playlists, and podcasts; the free version can download podcasts only. Spotify states that users need to go online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads. It lists storage, app reinstall, more than five devices, an out-of-date app, and a faulty SD card among possible reasons downloads may be lost; after reinstalling, downloads must be downloaded again. Spotify Support Downloads are app-managed and subject to Spotify’s account and reconnection conditions. Spotify also states a limit of 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices.
YouTube Music downloads Music downloads require Premium. Podcasts can be downloaded regardless of membership, though some shows or episodes may not be available as audio-only downloads. Smart Downloads can save up to 200 recently played songs; the number of downloads otherwise depends on available storage and file length and quality. Google / YouTube Music Help YouTube Music says users must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads.
TIDAL offline access TIDAL’s Android support article, updated January 9, 2026, says supported Android phones and tablets can save albums, movies, videos, shows, and playlists for offline access. TIDAL Support The cited article does not state a periodic reconnection rule. Check the current terms for your account and content rather than assuming downloads remain available indefinitely.

Keep the setup practical

  • Choose the right transfer cable: if you need to copy music from a computer, use a USB cable with the correct connector that also supports data transfer; some charging-only cables will not work for file copying.
  • Watch available storage: leave room for the phone and music-player app to function, and check the actual free space before transferring a large library.
  • Protect the library: keep a second copy of music you care about somewhere other than the phone.
  • Check compatibility by model: do not assume the phone has a headphone jack, microSD slot, a particular USB connector, or support for a specific player or audio adapter.
